Now York Gas Mains on Fire NEW YORK June 12An explosion of gas at I the corner of Broadway and Fulton street occurred oc-curred this morning where men were excavating excavat-ing for repairs A number of men were badly scorched The gas continued burn during the forenoon obstructing travel on the busiest corner cor-ner in the city At 4 oclock the gas Is still burning fiercely and serious result 1 feared Ropes are stretched across Broadway and Ful ton street and traffic suspended Large gangs of men are tearing up the streets endeavoring to reach the gas mains to shut off the supply The gas is burning fiercely under the streets for hundreds of feet in every direction and the mains are red hot to a much greater distance The fire department has been hard at work for hours pumping water into the surrounding man holes in a vain effort to cool off the pipes Just what may happen next no one seems to know The damage already is estimated at over fifty thousand dollars After several hours Afer of hard work the gas was shutoff and the fire stopped During all this time business on Broadway was practically at a standstill as flames were shooting up fiercely
