Show THE HOBO BRIGADE The Noble American Citizens Begging for Bread SCENES IN ALLMGHT SALOONS The Stories Told in Two Different Sections of the City Yesterday of Liberal Lib-eral Voters From two widely seperated sections of the city yesterday there camo a demand for a HERALD reporter The responses made brought out the following Its the old story of last August told I over again said a lady who lives on the outskirts of tho city in the neighborhood of the Warm springs 1 At that time this section of the city was fairly overrun with tramps and the doorbells door-bells of the different houses were kept almost al-most constantly going by men who begged for a crust or something to eat I fed no less than forty in one week then but I resolved that this year I would not go to the expense of feeding a lot of fellows fel-lows who for a few cents sold their votes to the Liberal party Well now they are on it again Today and yesterday I havo had not less than ten callers for food and clothing and being a good Democrat I deemed it my duty to learn whether I would be administering comfort to m T my political po-litical opponents if I wore to respond to their demands The following conversation conversa-tion Is a sample of the many I have held 1 You are strong and healthy apparent ly why dont you go to work I cant get any work now maam Wbare did you work last II Onthe water mains and sewers me lady II Well why arent you there nowl Because dont vou see the plootinn ia now over II What ticket did you vote II The Liberal of course That was the understanding when I went to work but I did not know that I was to be thrown out just as soon as election was over But I am not the only one in the same boat theres many a one of us who havent a cent to buy a square meal and without clothes enough to cover our backs Well what are you going to d01 1 askedI dont know was the xesponse I I You voted Moran Horn and Bell into offices in the Fourth precinct Yes Well then you had better go to Moran Bell and Horn for your dinner I And the fellow then left ANOTHER CASE A gentleman who lives on the southern outskirts of the city near Liberty Park saidI I am almost afraid to go to work and leave my family unprotected from the possibie assaults of the horde of tramps who have suddenly appeared in my neighborhood neigh-borhood They are all hungry ragged and generally used up They have been in the employ of the city for a couple of months and found their position an easy one Being assured that work was permanent perma-nent they saved no money most of their earnings outside of their board being spent in tho saloons Election day came and thoy voted as they were bidden only to find a day or so later that their services were no longer needed I want THE Han ALD to warn all the people that we are liable to have another reign of terror here owing to the fact that these men have neon turned loose upon the community to live as best they may THE ALLNIGHT SALOONS present curious spectacles just now At an early hour this morning a few of them were visited by the writer and this is what he saw In one were thirtytwo men ranging in ages from twenty to probably sixty or seventy They were for the most part tolerably sober but a glance at their facee showed that it was not voluntary on their part for as a rather welldressed snort sauntered up to tho bar and tossed off a nightcap or a bracer for breakfast dozen pair of eyes were turned wistfully towards him as though in hope that he might say something But he didnt and the fellows again began dozing doz-ing around the stove Stretched under the billiard tables were probaoly fifteen or twenty mon all fast asleep In another there were twentyfive or more of the most forlorn and disconsolate persons imaginable It was evident that a row of some kind had just subsided for tho barkeeeper was indulging in language was from polite and an old man and a young far one were wiping blood from their faces with a towel that the tuff who presides at the bar had loaned them In a small saloon on a side street there were twentrfive ragged specimens of humanity hu-manity huddled together patiently awaiting await-ing for the dawning of another day Several other saloons contributed their quota so it is safe to say that each night in this city there are not less than 300 men and boys who are allowed to and make a practice of sleeping around the stoves of barrooms who rarely hit a bed oftener than once or twice a week Asked as to the reasons one of the barkeepers bar-keepers said Oh those fellows are an infernal in-fernal nuisance They never spend a cent but think nothing of coming up to the bar and asking for a drink of water and otherwise other-wise making themselves offensive Are they always as numerous as at present I Well no wehaventbeen bothered very much for several weeks past but since tho election they have been coming in by droves They seem to think too that they have not been rightly treated by those who promised them work all summer provided they voted the Liberal ticket last Monday These are the American citizens who were deprived of their holiest rightthat of casting a free and independent ballot Faugh 1 |
