Show Hills Adherents Afraid of Whitney Special to THE HERALD Examiner Diapatch1 NEW YORK Fob iLA Worlds special from Albany says Among the men who built the Democratic political machine there is widespread fear that there is more in the Now York movement against Senator Hill than appears on the surface Back ot all such movements they say there is always al-ways some animating mind some personal treasury from which at least tho first expenses ex-penses are drawn THE ORDINARY MACHINE POLITICIAN novor admits tbe possibility of largo bodies ui unions movin moving spontaneously for common com-mon purposes as a matter of principle His first question is Who is behind itt And his next What are they after The politicians poli-ticians hero answer tha first question with the name of William C Whitney the bril liant exsecretary of the navy during Mr Clevelands administration They have token up the men who have so far appeared in the movement examined into their motives mo-tives their past political conditions and the only man they can see in tho stab who could have brought the movement to ITS PRESENT MENACING PROPORTIONS is Mr Whitney They say ho will never allow himself to be identified with the movement until it shall become a success Those who speak all of them friends of Senator Hill say the exsecretary is seek log the presidential nomination himself that he hopes when Cleveland is seen to be clearly out that the mantle of his old chief may be put on him by the Cleveland men at Chicago Closo Irionds of Senator Hill say that two years ago Mr Whitney and Daniel S Lament were asked to define their political attitude or rather to say whether they would oppose Senator Hills ambition It miwht be interred from what these men say that some sort of tentative offer was mode for A POLITICAL ALLIANCE on the part of the Senator If it was made it was rejected But say the Hill men Mr Whitney and his friends gave assurances assur-ances or at least were understood to give assurances that whilo they would like to help Mr Cleveland and would prefer to vote for him they would not seek to fight Senator Hill in Now York state Inc impression was created among the Hill mon that Mr Whitney was devoting himself to building up his private fortunes and would probaoly never enter politics sgain Governor Hill and his friends were more than satisfied with such a state of af fairs and they went ahead confident of suc cess Just before the meeting of the state committee however they say they began to hear WHI9PER3 OF WHITNET WHITNEY among some men of political influence Ttien came the issuing of the Reform club circular and the movement in New York The Hill men have tried to find the connection connec-tion between these events and Mr Whitney Whit-ney in vain but they believe that there is such a connection Otters say that at the bottom this now association is planned for theapur pose of building a new political organization organiza-tion in New York city in OPPOSITION TO TAMMANY HALL The County Democracy has gone down forever and cannot bo revived under any conditions or any shape which would got the confidence of Democratic voters The Yoorhis faction is distrusted as a secret alliance to Tammany Hall with but aa imaginary organization Something entirely en-tirely now was necessary ana that something some-thing new should be entirely Democratic To have strength it should be started in the spring These political reasoners say that if some antiHill man should be nominated nom-inated at Chicago some ono not in THE H1LLGORMANBRICE COMBINE he would naturally owe a great deal to this new movement and if Democratic success should come in November the organization supported by federal patronage would develop de-velop into a rival worthy of Tammanys steeliest steel Senator Vests letter to the Democrats assembled at Denver Tuesday night in which ho pointed out Governor Roswell P Flower as the best kind of a compromise candidate has not attracted much attention here That phase of the situation baa been discussed here often and as was said there are any number of men who would much rather take Flowers chances of being chosen at Chicago than those of either Hill or Cleveland One effect ef-fect of the Vest letter has been to draw out a declaration from Mr Hills friends that in the event of Hill not getting tho nomination it will not go to any other Now Yorker that the state delegates to be chosen on Washingtons birthday will SINK OR SWIM WITH HILL Herein lies a deep game for if a western man should be chosen that would not Injure In-jure Senator Hills prestige in his own state ho would still bo leader here and ai such n leader ho would In the event of Democratic success be in all probability the almoner of federal patronage and the present organization would flourish and grow still stronger on this new moat If aNew a-New Yorker should be chosen howeyer SENATOR HILLS GLORY WOULD BE ECLIPSED immediately He would be only second man here and that position would depend on his good behavior for the new President Presi-dent could and probably would find friends to show him how to destroy the old organization and build up a new one with the organizers name on the ownership plate Even as grand vizier or prime minister the Senator would bo at the mercy of another man and take orders from him and ho hasnt done that since Samuel J Tilden passed away Political experts think that Gorman of Maryland is PLAYING THE SHREWDEST OF GAMES and that he has overmatched Senator Hill They point out that by urging Hill on to hold an early convention and thus announce an-nounce to tbe world that ho was Now Yorks favorite he was sure to rouse up the Cleveland men and start a faction fight which might kill off both of the New York aspirants |
