Show THE HOME RULE BILL BILLI I The Senate Committee Hears 1 Arguments in its Favor UTAH REPUBLICANS INTERESTED Smith of Ogden Analyses the Measure Senator Sen-ator Carey Approves Itlbs Church Out of Politics WASHINGTON D C Feb 11Special telegram to THE HERALD Chairman Platt sat at the head of the long table in the centre of the committoa room on territories tories this morning and grouped around about him were the various Republican and Democratic members of the committed It was regular meeting day but the entire session was spent in hearing an argument which H W Smith of Ogden made in favor of the Home Rule bill All the Utah gentlemen who were in attendance at the meeting of the House committee yesterday were present as were also Mr John Henry Smith of Salt Lake and C F Rathbone of Eureka Mr Smith first read the memorial prepared by the legislature of Utah and then taking the Home Rule bill analysed i thoroughly and explained its provisions He referred with pardonable pride to the ability of territory TO TAKE CARE OF ITSELF IN EVERY PAR TICULAR I Ho narrated a whole list of abuses so familiar to the people of Utah which exist 1 in different departments of local government govern-ment He referred briefly in passing to tho Utah commission and stated that polyg I amy was us dead in the territory as inany state of the union and that that was tho only objection that had ever been urged against the people Referring to the frequently quently expressed feature of the domination domina-tion of the Mormon hierarchy Mr Smith sad there was nothing in it that the Peoples Peo-ples party had been disbanded and that THE CHURCH WAS OUT OF POLITICS The Senators present followed Mr Smiths argument and interrupted him at times with questions calculated to make clear to them tho real situation in the cear territory They inquired particularly as to changes which tho bill would make in I the organic act and as to the details of both of this and the statehood bill and essential difference between them I was expected that Mr C C Richards would follow Mr Smith and give a still further review of the social and political conditions of the territory but the hour of noon had nearly been reached before Mr Smith had concluded and an adjournment was taken untill Saturday morning next in order that Mr Richards might make a full argument without being interrupted Chairman Chair-man Platt stated at the conclusion of the hearing that THE STATEHOOD PEOPLE also wanted to be given an audience and that he would probably decide between now and Saturday when thpy too might be heard ihe hearing today demonstrated the fact hat Mr Carey of Wyoming who is one of ho members of the committee is in hearty sympathy with thl Utah gentlemen their lions to tnrow nfF tae territorial snacinoa plnrt terrlOrlal snacllos and govern themselves He spoke with strong emphasis of the evils of the territorial territo-rial form of government and in various other ways satisfied the Utah people that his sympathy had been fully aroused in their behalf |
