Whitney I NEW YORK Feb nThoro was held tonight to-night in the large hal of Cooper Union a massmeeting of Democrats to protest against the holding of the Democratic state convention February 22 after only four weeks notice I is this convention which has been denominated SENATOR HILLS SNAP CONVENTION and the meeting tonight was promoted largely by adherents of exPresident Cleveland Cleve-land Among those who signed the call were Frederick R Coudert exMayor Tie mann Oswold Ottendorfer E Ellery Anderson Charles J Canada exMayor Grace exMayor Cooper Everett Wheeler exJustice M Daly exMayor Hewitt and oxSecretary of the Treasury Fairchild Every available inch of standing room in the historic hal was occupied and many of those who were tardy in seeking entrance were unable to got in Oswald pro-voking as it is uncalled for and its only explanation ex-planation is that it is well adapted to promote the schemes of some intriguing in-triguing politicians who have reason to avoid the open daylight and try to secure a snap judgment by which they can pretend to represent the Democracy of the Empire state It is not for the promotion of the ambition of this or that man but for the triumph of the principles in the defense of which the Democracy of the United States achieved a victory during the last two years that thatWE WE ENTER OUt PROTEST Members of the Democratic state committee com-mittee have made a fearful mistake and mistake in such a matter is worse than crime Seeing the results of their error I hope they will retrace their steps and adopt measures in accordance with the requirements I require-ments of fairness and justice I not they have to take the responsibility for tho disastrous dis-astrous consequences that may followtbeir unwise and inconsiderate action Frederick Candert was the next speaker The meeting said ho was not to denounce or glorify any human being but the assertion as-sertion of a right of which men in authority author-ity sre seeking to deprive them In naming the objections to the call for the cention of the 22nd mat he said in part Every departure from usage and custom requires un explanation on the part of those who make the departure to those interested in the subject Custom is law to violate law is crime we therefore are in the right an may insist upon receiving receiv-ing valid explanation TIE PRECEDENT OP A QUARTER OF A CENTURY have established a uniform rule and wo say to the committee Why have you changed itl I you have good reason produce pro-duce it These men who are called leaders must bear in mind they aro trustees and trnnts not autocrats that thev cannot Ig0UI substitute their will for that of the mass of their political brethren It was intended to seo that all Democrats should have an oppunity to register their votes I was not intended to cut off thousands sands of men without regard to rights in order to serve a purpose I may be no purpose exists but no great party can af ford to place its members in such a strait that loyalty to the party and selfrespect cannot exist At the conclusion of Couderts speech some one called THREE CHEERS FOR GROVER CLEVELAND There was a good response followed by scattering hisses Mr Coulert was selected select-ed as president of the meeting and a list of vicepresidents and sectetaries containing a selection of about three hundred names United Stales District Attorney Walker then offered a set of resolutions which were warmly applauded and adopted with practical unanimity only a few scattering noes being heard The resolutions wore substantially as follows THE RESOLUTIONS This assembly of Democrats of the city of New York makes a protest and appeal against tbo uncalled for and ill advised action ac-tion of the state committee in designating Iso I-so early a date as the 22nd of February for a meeting of the state convention to select delegates to the national convention The resolutions declare delegates shonld bo fresh from the people no body of men elected to exprsos the will of the votors should be for an unreasonable time custodians cus-todians of voters rights or hold delegated powers for a period longer than is absolutely abso-lutely necessary and an expression of the people should be made in party assemblies assemb-lies upon subjects presently to be decided at as near a time to that wherein a decision is reached as can be reasonabiy and conveniently con-veniently appointed The action of the state committee is declared to bo CONTRARY TO PARTY USAGE AND IRREGULAR it denies to the Democratic electors of the state the full fair and effective exercise of their IghtU to bo represented in the caucuses primaries and district and state conventions Their action is a grave violation vio-lation of the political duties of the committee com-mittee which cannot but expose the party to needless danger in the election in November No-vember A copy of the resolutions is to be sent to members of the state committee a committee com-mittee of fifty with power to add to the number to be appointed by the chairman of the meeting to communicate with the state committee to protest against their acton ac-ton in designating the date already fixed and urge them to reconsider and revoke the call I that Is not done the committee commit-tee shall exercise such further powers and tale such other action as may secure proper representation of the people of state in the national convention as may seem proper in accord with the spirit of these resolutions A TELEGRAM OF COMMENDATION was received from the Montgomery Alabama I Ala-bama Cleveland Democratic club which protested against the action of the New York state committee as unjust unfair and serlouly imperilling the interests of the party throughout the union John G Milburn of Erie county spoke declaring for sending a delegation to Chicago to come right from the heart of the people strong for tariff reform for a sound currency an administration conducted con-ducted on business principles and for the nomination of a highminded Democrat who is such in deed and not in words alone During this speech the latent enthusiasm for Grover Cleveland was brought out Yells went up as from ono throat hats morn waved and umbrellas flourished wildly while the cry Grover Cleveland was heard again and again E Ellery Anderson ono of the leaders in the meeting sot forth that Cleveland stood emphatically for tariff reform and against the free coinage of silver while Hill practically prac-tically favored silver legislation Ho did not intend to say anything as to the merits of the positions taken by these distinguished distin-guished gentlemen on the issues above named ho only referred to them to say that they present QUESTIONS OF GREAT GRAVITY which involve almost every commercial and individual Interest in the land If ever there was an occasion when it was right and proper that the people to be affected by tho results of the the issues should have full opportunity to deliberate deliber-ate to discuss and to decide of their own free will which of the two men should bo their standardbearers that occasion was presented by the gravity of these issues and the relations held thereto there-to by these two candidates JSo good reason had been assigned by any member of the committee said Mr Anderson or any of its defenders for it except that it was intended to advance THE FORTUNES AND AMBITIONS OF DAVID 1W HILL ExSecretary of the Treasury Fairchild said in port Wo boliove our principles are in danger Just so firmly as has been and will bo my devotion to Democracy just so firmly will I stand by this movement move-ment to check usurpers who while wearIng wear-ing the labels seek to bind all true Democrats Demo-crats in chains and thus prevent them from defending the principles of Democracy Demo-cracy The meeting closed with rattling cheers for Grover Cleveland |
