Show TilE SAME OLD STORY It will be interesting to see what facts will Lo referred to what methods of argument argu-ment will bo adopted by the delegations that go to Washington from this city to oppose op-pose the Home Rule Bill now under consideration con-sideration by tho House and Senate committees com-mittees on territories The only opposition to be expected from the Republicans will come in the form of arequest for statehood It never having occurred to their minds that the difficulties in Utah could be swept away and something like justice be done to the people of Utah they were going to sit quietly down and accept the position as stated by President HARRISON which in substance was this The Mormon people are not to be trusted Their giving up polygamy poly-gamy is only a sham They are not sincere sin-cere It will be unsafe to give statehood to Utah lest from behind state lines they reestablish plural marriage We must wait until the population of Utah so changes that the state to be eventually created out of that territory will enact the same laws in respect to polygamy as the nation has enacted No compact formed between the United States and the new state to bo created cre-ated would be binding in his opinion hence ho saw no safety in granting statehood state-hood to Utah Such was the PresIdents position and local Republicans wore for I letting the matter rest there waiting like PATIENCE on a monument for one I of three things First for President HARRISON to quit the White House in Washington and become plain B H or second tho national Republican party to havo a change of heart by which it would have more confidence in the American people peo-ple of a great commonwealth or third for tho population of Utah to be so changed that nonMormons or perhaps Republicans Republi-cans were in a sale majority But behold be-hold while they all slumbered and slept the sleep of the slothful Democratic ingenuity in-genuity invented a scheme which while it swept away all doubts and fears of President Presi-dent HARBISON gave at the same time a large increase of liberty to the people of Utah Local Republicans awoke in time to see the grand procession advancing ad-vancing under double quick time and finding tho ranks so closely packed that there was no placo for them except at the tail end they girded up their loins and undertook to bead off the Democratic Demo-cratic procession by forming a new one and shouting statehood in hopes of overwhelming over-whelming tho Democratic demand for Home Rule How they will succeed wit B H in tho Presidential chair needs no ghost from the other world to tell us Democrats will never oppose statehood for Utah but they are persuaded that with a Republican in the White Houso with a Republican majority in the Senate and remembering re-membering that Jt is a Democratic state which was to ask for admission they believed be-lieved statehood out of the question and therefore asked for as much justice for the people of Utah as they I could hope to obtain under existing conditions condi-tions and we feel assured that if that measure is defeated it will not bo through the Republican statehood movement unless President HARRISON is ready to confess that he wrote en item in his message to Congress involving the happiness and welfare wel-fare of an entire commonwealth of people without first becoming informed upon the subject We scarcely think ho will be I ready to do that As for the Liberal foes of Home Rule we know in advance what their story and argument will be They will adopt to a certain extent both the supposed facts and the arguments of President HARRISON They will insist that tho shadows which flitted athwart the fair valleys the lake and the mountain sides of Utah a generation genera-tion ago and which have passed away I with the false lights that mado them possible are still real livq things to be dreaded and fought though the attacking attack-ing party but boat the air They will tell again the threadbare tales of former years of Mormon hobgoblins and orgies They will again attempt to make congressional faces turn white with tear I as they detail tho bloodcurdling stories of Mormon atrocities Again will they grow eloquent in denouncing the horrors of polygamy and the iniquity of Mormon priestly rule Wo shall hear again that the Mormon peoplo are not sincere that they contemplate an act of punic faith that they are not to bo trusted that the leopard changoth not his spots nor the Ethiopian his kin We shall be told that tho earnest men who have said that the cause for local strife is ended and have aligned themselves with the great national parties and are big with manly hope for the future of Utah aro either dupes of Mormon cunning cun-ning or knaves seeking their own profit Therefore they will aSK Congress not to grant Homo Rule not to grant statehood until Utah becomes thoroughly Americanized American-ized that is has become Liberal But it is questionable if this recital and the arcument based upon it will ever pass current again in Washington One would think tho parties who are set apart by the Liberal priests to rerump it would sicken and turn away but then the dog can turn to his vomit the sow to her wallowing in the mire and filtb because it is their nature to do so we suppose and so men who give themselves up to falsehood to distrust of their fellows to hate bitterness bitter-ness and wrath can be persuaded to follow I out tho Liberal progrumme against the peace liberty and happiness of the people of Utah Meanwhile however the people of Utah have arrived at a point in their progress towards wards their full measure of liberty that they can smile at these petty efforts to I I hinder its coming Go on gentlemen Eat again your old vomit spew it out and eat gain tho time will come when it will be as nauseating to you as to thoso who must nov needs watch you go through tbe disgusting dis-gusting process In tho end your efforts wIll be vain Liberty will come to Utah and come soon and no power this side of or in hell can stop it The echoes slumbering in our grand old mountain cauons were made by GOD to bo awakened by the voice of free men Our skies wero not stretched over fair Utah to shed glory upon any but a free people |
