Show ThOSE bAJlAGE bUffS Seven of the men who were denied the privilege of voting in the Fourth ward on Monday have brought suit against the election judges claiming damages to the amount of 3000 in each instance The boss of the Liberal party has published an appeal for funds with which to institute suits against the judges in behalf of tho hundred or moro fellows who were not permitted to vote at the poll mentioned Parenthetically It may be remarked that uu uoss will use to rustle frAtttr liTolt to pretty lively find all of his distinguished clients as Mr BILLY RYAN the superintendent of vaterworks is understood to bo discharging discharg-ing men since Monday as there will ba no more voting in the Fourth ward for six months THE HERALD is mighty glad these suits have boon instituted and we hope there wIll be more of them Wohopo that every hobo brought hero by tho Liberal bosses and who was not allowed to cast a vote on Monday will bring suit for damages though vo protest against these plaintiffs being kept on the city pay roll pending tho trial of their actions and the recovery of damages dam-ages We are going to look to Mayor BASKIN to protect the city treasury against raids of this character We want as many of theo suits as possible started They will help tho district court clerk and the marshal between whom the fees will be divided and they will have a tendency to equalize the brains and the money of those Liberal gentlemen who at present have more of the latter than the former And what is of greater importance import-ance they will judicially determine whether or not colonizing for voting purposes pur-poses is legitimate and legal Tho courts will be permitted to say if acity ofilcial can erect tents in a precinct thirty days before election fill them with men from other precincts or other parts of the territory pay them out of the public treasury and i vote them on election day tho day following follow-ing striking tents and giving the men their discharge If all this can be dono then our elections of the future will be more Qf a fraud mote of a farce than they have been and running hobo trains from other states and distant parts of the territory will become an Industry regularly practiced I prac-ticed by the party m control of the public funds Wo want to see these suits prosecuted prose-cuted vigorousj tried right up to the I bandletho widest latitude consistent with the proper application of tho law permitted per-mitted on both sides We want tho plaintiffs plain-tiffs to tell on what ground they claim the right to vote wo want them to toll under oath whether or not they were colonized and if so by whom and under what conditions and whether or not it was part of any bargain entered into that they should vote a certain tickot The decent people of Utah are a good deal more interested in having the questions ques-tions involved in these suits judicially determined de-termined than the plaintiffs can possibly bo i |
