e RAISE FRESH H AND p pS S SALT WATER FISH Commissioner Chambers Plans to Use Part of Great Salt Lake BEAR RIVER FOR BASS OCEAN AND RIVER PRODUCTS COULD BE PROPAGATED f Officials of the state fish and game department as well as those of the government gov government government and of the tho Union Pacific rail railroad railroad railroad road ore are ar Interested in n a plan by means of which It Is proposed ad to shut off ott the north portion of the Great Salt lake known as Bear River bay and provide bodies of water where it will be possible possible ble blo to plant fresh water and salt water fish It Is ia proposed to accomplish the tho pro proposed proposed proposed posed end by means of dikes built near the Lucin cutoff The portion of tho the lake north of the cutoff which would be separated from the main body of water and which would have the fresh freshwaters freshwaters freshwaters waters of the Bear river flowing into it would have an extent of between and forty square miles mUes and would provide perhaps the greatest place for ducks and for various species of fish to be found in the tho country Fred W Chambers state fish and game commissioner said Saturday that those connected with the department already had looked over the ground and that It is hoped to have the plan carried out It is said that the government un undoubtedly undoubtedly undoubtedly will stock the lake If the work of building the dikes is carried out by bythe bythe bythe the railroad company and the state and andon andon andon on account of the benefit which would accrue to the railroad through the car carrying carrying carrying out of ot this plan It is thought the road would be willing to stand a large share of the expense of building the he dikes It has been reported that if the state would put up of the amount the railroad company would furnish the Ute rest of the funds required although Chambers said yesterday that no proposition has been advanced yet as to the tho portion of the burden to tobe tobe tobe be borne by the state It is not known yet how many dikes S would be needed to hold held back the nam rian body of water but It Is thought tho that not more than three would havo have to be constructed at the most The plan lIlan would be to have the dike so built dud ltd screened that the fish from the body of water to the north could not get bet through the screens into the salt water beyond the dikes while at the same time the water could be replenished from the larger and saltier body as needed It is said that the salt water fish would thrive in that portion of the lake now known as the Sear River bay while the water of ot the thi Bear river would prove a fine place for bass With the carrying out of the plans this state would have It Is said one of the finest fishing and shooting grounds In the country The fish and game officials officials officials of the state will go right ahead with the Investigation of the proposition proposition proposition tion and it is possible that work may be started at no far distant date I
