Show Cancer: most Curable? Cancer is one of the most curable of the major diseases in this country. i THAT STATEMENT, shocking but true, is the message of "The Hopeful Side of Cancer," a newly revised booklet now available from the Utah Division of the American Cancer Society. There are 1.5 million Americans alive today who have had cancer and defeated it. The booklet aims to dispel the fear that too often blocks public awareness of the progress being made against cancer, and prevents patients from seeking help, said Dr. Gerald P. Stevenson, Utah Division President. CONCRETE ADVANCES have been made in early detection de-tection of cancer through the "Pap" test; new techinques for detecting endometrial cancer; the proctosigmoides-cope proctosigmoides-cope (procto) which detects colon and rectum cancer; breast mammography and thermography. Early detection detec-tion is also aided when people get an annual checkup, know cancer's seven warning signals, sig-nals, and women practice breast self-examination. Prevention of some cancers is also possible. More is being learned about substances on the job and in the environment environ-ment which cause cancer. Lung cancer is largely preventable by not smoking, and skin cancer by avoiding overexposure to the sun. ADVANCES AND improvements in surgery, radiotherapy and anti-cancer drugs and hormones, and use of some of them together, have increased their effectiveness effec-tiveness against cancer and their safety. Increasing emphasis is being be-ing placed on rehabilitating cancer patients through such programs as "Reach to Recovery" and similar programs aiding those who have lost their larynxes and those who have undergone ostomy surgery, all using volunteers who are former patients themselves. FINALLY, PROMISING research projects are being carried out in a number of areas, including viruses, immunology, im-munology, and better treatments treat-ments for cancer patients.
