Show Open House For 80th Anniversary R. La Mar Barlow will be honored by his family at an open house Sunday, Oct. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at his home 73 West 100 North, Bountiful. Friends and relatives are invited in-vited to attend. HE WAS born Oct. 10, 1896 to Wilford and Laura Ann Jackson Barlow in the family home that his family built, in 1885. Nine of the family of 12 were born in that home. It . still is in use and is located at 182 West 300 No., Bountiful. In 1874, an elementary one room brick school house was built on the north side of their block and that is where he first went to school. Mrs. May Cooper, who later became Mrs. James Bumes, was his first teacher. THEN IN 1906, when Stoker School was completed, he started to school there. His father was a truck gardner, selling produce on the Salt Lake Market, three days a week. As the older brothers married and moved 1; ? ? Jij R. T-aMAR BARLOW -i away, he took over the job of : peddling vegetables, at the:-: age of 16. IN 1910, a boys club was formed for the boys of South:;. Davis County, by Loren-Briggs. Loren-Briggs. This club was called , YMDL, meaning Young Mens Development League. In 1912,: they became the second scout troop in Utah, with Salt Lake: , City being the first. t In 1917 he joined the army,: . : 145 Field Artillery and left for;;1 ; Camp Kearney on Oct. 10, his birthday. After six months training, he left for France, -J j going immediately to the war ; : zone. After the Nov. II Ar-" mistice, he was sent to Ger-r ; many in the army of occupa-:" tion. For two months, since r his family had not heard from :'-him, :'-him, he was believed to be"-; dead. ;: : HE SERVED 17 years in"? scouting, as scout, scout-::' master or South Davis scout : commissioner. :- He served three years as " president of the Flora DelK-Garden DelK-Garden Club and for many -years a active member of the" Utah Rose Society, American ? Gladiola Society and Utah Dahlia Club. ON APRIL 4, 1923, he : married Dora Hess of Far- mington, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died on March 30, 1968. They have two: children, La Mar H., and Maurine B. Stahle, both of Bountiful. On April 21, 1970, he married Alice Y. Hess. His hobby is his home surrounded by garden and flowers. |
