Show ; i Davis United Way Goal f The United Way of the Great Salt Lake Area has kicked off its 1976 fund raising rais-ing campaign this year and has set a goal of 2.45 million dollars. THE CAMPAIGN is aimed at the working community of Salt Lake, Tooele and South Davis Counties. Money raised goes to help over 220,000 persons per-sons who receive benefits of 57 agencies such as Red Cross, Neighborhood House and the Work Activity Center for Handicapped Adults. A new agency this year is the Home Health Agency of Davis County. THE CAMPAIGN officially began September 21 when the organization held its kickoff luncheon at Hotel Utah. 500 persons heard Robert Bolinder, executive vice president of Albertsons.and an active worker in the United Way of Ada County (Idaho) and United Way of America. A separate but affiliated Davis County kickoff was held September 28 at the Oak Ridge Country Club. Elder Sterling Sill, Assistant to the Council of Twelve, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spoke to 85 volunteers and the Davis County Commission. Com-mission. BUT BEHIND the scenes of this year's drive- which hopes to raise $235,000 more than last year's record high of $2,215,000 - work has been going on for weeks. All seventeen pacesetter companies, com-panies, which run their campaigns cam-paigns early and thus "set the pace", have already reported their results. Kenneth Richins, president of Bountiful's Kenway Corp., and vice president of the pacesetters, announced that this year's group raised $87,852, almost doubling last year's amount of $44,839. THREE OF those pacesetter paceset-ter companies were Davis County's Aero-Tech, Bailey Moving and Storage and the J. C. Penney Company of Bountiful. Willard Shingleton, office manager for Bailey Moving and Storage said his company's com-pany's decision to be a pacesetter was its first involvement invol-vement with the United Way campaign. All of Bailey's employees participated and donated $659, not including the firm's gift. "OUR MANAGEMENT checked into the United Way to see if it was administered well. We found that the money did go where it was needed, that the administrative costs were not high, and so on. We felt that it would be better to participate in one campaign that helps everyone than to be in two or three dozen different ones.'-' . :: "I used to work at Primary Children's Hospital, so I knew what Developmental Disabilities- (a United Way agency that works with handicapped children and is located at the hospital) - does for those kids and I tried to convey that message to the employees." "IT ALSO meant a lot to our people that the money was staying in the area and not going to New York or Los Angeles." Ron Schaller was active in Aero-Tech's campaign. That firm's employees donated $1,987 plus a firm gift, and also had one hundred percent participation. Schaller said he felt that choosing company solicitors from among coworkers co-workers had a lot to do with their success. "WE HAD A breakfast for these solicitors, showed them a campaign film and made a pitch about United Way. Then we had a meeting for all the employees at which the president of the company talked to them and I spoke about what I had seen at the agencies. We also gave them a chance to ask questions." "We didn't force anyone and 26 donated their fair share." FAIR SHARE is a giving guideline based on income, which averages about 3 minutes salary per day for those earning $10,000 or less. For those earning over $10,000 the amount comes to approximately one per cent of income. Penney's Bountiful store had participated in the United Way drive, but never before as a pacesetter. According to Robert Mayo, senior merchandising manager and in charge of his company's drive, employees alone donated $2,040, about 64 percent per-cent more than last year.
