Show DEATH OF A SENATOR McEnery of Louisiana Passes Away Quite Suddenly New Orleans, June 28. United States Senator Samuel Douglass Mc-Enerv Mc-Enerv died at his home here this ! morning. j Senator McEnery ' arrived from Washington yesterday morning, suf-; fering from an attack of Indigestion. He was taken to his home here, where physicians were summoned. I The senator rallied somewhat after treatment but late last night his con-' dltlon took a turn for the worse and 1 early this morning he lapsed Into un-! consciousness and died shortly before 10 o'clock. Senator McEnery was in his 74th ; year and his health had not been good . for several years. Seemed In Good Health. Washington, June 2S Senator McEnery Mc-Enery left Washington Saturday even- ' lng, only a few hours before congress , closed He appeared to bo In tho best of health. Senator McEnery started for New Orleans last night on receipt of a telegram. I HIr present, which was his third, term, would not hae expired until I March 3, 1915. During his service he was known as an Independent Democrat who voted frequently with the Republicans. This was true particularly In tariff legislation. Throughout the last two revisions of th tariffs he contended for the protection of cane sugar Interests In-terests and was willing to make concessions con-cessions to the majority party In return re-turn for favors shown to him. At times his attitude provoked some criticism from his party associates, associ-ates, but this never swerved him from his Independent course. The fact that Senator McEnery was afllcted with almost total deafness prevented him from taking an active part In debates. de-bates. Sergeant At-Arms Ransdell telegraphed tele-graphed today to lenrn the wishes of the family in relation to having nn official funeral. Until he gets a reply, re-ply, no committees will be named. |
