Ninety golfers will tee it up May 6. Police golf benefit a week away A number of local businesses have donated prizes that should "make this golf tournament very interesting," said Vernal City Police Chief Robert Downard about the May 6 second annual Police Department charity tournament to help the Uintah Learning Center. Downard said four of the nine holes will have something more to offer the golfer thawhat first meets the eye. Hole one will have a 12-foot diameter circle drawn around the hole. For a donation of $1, each golfer will have a chance to win a dinner donated by the Vernal Mine Company or the 7-11 Ranch Restaurant by hitting his tee shot into the circle. On hole two, each drive from the tee will be measured and the longest during the day will net the golfer a fishing rod and reel. Hole five has been dubbed "The Mayor's Hole." This will also be a longest drive hole and the winner will receive a gift certificate from Mr. S Clothing. There is a catch, however. Continued on page 5 Golf... Continued from page 1 Golfers must be sitting on a bale of hay when they swing. Hole nine will be another closest to the hole contest. The golfer coming closest will win a round trip ticket on Skywest Airlines to St. George. Second closest will receive a $100 gift certificate from Showalter Ford. Third place will win a dozen golf balls, courtesy of Dinaland Golf Course. For any golfer on the day who makes a hole-in-one, Darrell Lance of the Vernal Ver-nal Police Department will donate $100, plus they will receive a pair of golf or running shoes from the Hayloft. For the team finishing with the best composite score, 'members will receive $30 gift certificates. Second place team members will receive $20 certificates, third will receive $15 certificates, and ,fourth will receive $10 certificates. Once the tournament is completed there will be a drawing for many more prizes, including a room for a night at the Vernal Sheraton with prime rib dinners for two. All proceeds of the tournament will go to the Uintah Learning Center. All prizes have been donated, and all the work is being done by the Vernal Police Department Depart-ment on their own time. Downard said this way there are no administrative costs and very little money going toward the implementation of the tournament. This way all money received can go directly to the Learning Center. The field of golfers was increased from the originally intended 72 to 90 participants. par-ticipants. Some people have even been turned away. Downard said this was unfortunate, un-fortunate, but there is just no way to make room for any more. As it is each team has five members. Registration for the tournament will be from 8 : 30 to 9 : 30 the morning of Friday, May 6. An opening ceremony will begin at 10:00 where Shirley Wilkins, director of the Uintah Learning Center, and a student stu-dent from the school will start things underway. The public is invited to come out to the golf course and join in the festivities. |
