Two sets of Georgia delegates were elected to tho Republican national convention and will malic a contest there for ' recognition. 1 The break came after a turmoil in i which Police Chief Beavers rook a hand on complaints of officials in the state capitol. where tho meeting was held. One of the factions, headed by Roscoc Pickett, state chairman, elected elect-ed four dclegates-at-largc Instructed for Major General Leonard Wood. The other, headed by Henry Lincoln Lin-coln Johnson, negro, formerly collector col-lector of internal revenue here, and C. P. G. Goree, a lawyer of Atlanta, elected uninstructed delegate's. Tho meeting was called for noon in the house of representatives, but two I hours beforo that time the Pickett ele- ment arrived and proceeded to busi- ness behind locked doors. Arriving to find themselves barred from the convention, con-vention, the Johnson-Gorcc faction pounded the doors, creating such excitement ex-citement that the police were called. Governor Dorscy decided that tho hall should be opened to all. The Pickett followers explained later that they load Intended, to open the doors at noon. Shouting arid singing, the Johnsu.i-Goree Johnsu.i-Goree faction marched Into the hall and proceeded to take charge. Johnson John-son himself mounted the platform, called the meeting to order and tried to make a speech against factionalism, factional-ism, but was almost drowned out by a chorus of shouts. Finally the two factions fac-tions held separate meetings in the same hall and elected their separate delegates. oo . |
