Show SEQUEL TO A PRIEST'S MARRIAGE Saturday afternoon James Ambrose Ryan, n former Catholic priest of Denver, Colorado, was arrested and landed In jail on the chargo of assault as-sault and battery, alleged to have been committed upon his wife, Mrs. Sadie Moran Ryan. According to the story told by Mrs. Moran and the officers who made the arrest, the erstwhile priest appeared at the Moran residence and demanded demand-ed that Mrs. Ryan resume living with him. Upon her refusal to do this, Ryan attacked her, It Is said, struck her several blows. The unfortunato love affair of Miss Moran and the Denver priest was tho talk of the inter-mountain region a little over a year ago, when tho couple eloped for parts unknown, the husband hus-band renouncing his vows of cellbracy, and the young wife prostrating her family with the notoriety she had gained. It s said that shortly after the elopement Ryan took his wife to Jop-lln. Jop-lln. Mo., where be was offered various positions in commercial lines An offer of-fer from the Episcopal church, however, how-ever, proved the stronger attraction as a' means of gaining a livelihood, the ex-prlest, It is said, remarking at the time, "This preaching business Is like taking candy away from an infant; in-fant; I guess I'll stick to that " Rumor has It that Ryan did nol live happily with his wife, thoir domestic trouble finally culminating In her leaving him and returning to her parents par-ents in Ogden. Ryan was fu,rlous, and is said to have advertised a reward re-ward of "ino for Information regard-lug regard-lug her whereabouts. Nothing was heard from Ryan by his wite until Thursday, when she received re-ceived a telegram from him at Helper, Hel-per, Utah, saying that he would arrive here FYlday. Anticipating that there might be trouble, Mrs Ryan's father and brother remained at home from their work Friday, and Ryan arrived according to schedule. Ills demeanor, however, was far from belligerent, and it Is said that he gave way to tears In his ontretles for her to return to him. He also askod that he might remove his baggape from his hotel to the Moran home. About 11 o clock Ryan again visited the Moran home and renewed his demands de-mands that his wlfir return to him. She Indignently refused to enlertaln the idea, whereupon he grew violent , and Is stild to have created consid- erahle havoc with the house furnishings furnish-ings in his efforts to prevent his wife from telephoning for assistance. Mrs. Ryan, however, succeeded In running to a neighboring residence, and sent word to the police and her father. The latter arrived first on the scene, in company with a Southern South-ern Pacific- fireman, and the two proceeded to give Ryan a thorough trouncing, and then sat upon him. Shortly afterwords an oftlc?r drove up In a neat single rig to make the arrest, but after sizing up 'he situation situa-tion decided that the police patrol would be more appropriate. The latter lat-ter soon arrived, accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Hutchlns, Captain Brown and Officers Mohlman and lever Ryan submitted with III grace to his arrest, and when it came to handcufflnc him the husky churchman made things exceedingly strenuous for the officers before he was loaded Into the patrol and taken to head-quarters. |
