Show i MADMAN SHOOTS DOWN TEN TOTS Lures Them to Death in Hills as a Game. Paris. A modern Spanish version of the Pied Piper legend conies from a village near Tarragona where a twen-ty-six-year-old crazy boy lured away ten children and shot them to death among the hills. The piper himself was later tracked down and shot by gendarmes. Jose Marinat was the lunatic's a. .me. Somewhere he procured a rille and enlisted the little ones of the village vil-lage in a troop thnt was to f:)llow him away while he hunted pigeons. He left the village with a half-dozen half-dozen little boys and girls In tow and picked up a few others on the way. The ragged company of small adven- turers with the mentally clouded Jose at their head disappeared among the low hills, laughing and leaping, all excitement ex-citement mid anticipation. When they reached wtiat was to he their camping place there were no pigeons to hunt. And in some way the crazy man's mind substituted children chil-dren for birds as the game to be brought down. From tlie disposition of the bodies it was plain thnt he killed the first child by surprise, and that the rest, attempting to flee, were hunted down one by one, and shot either while run- ning or were stalked and killed while in hiding. When he had killed all the tots who had followed him into tlie country, Jose found his hunting impulse still unsatisfied. He left the little valley and prowled among the farms. In the courtyard of one he shot a woman at work. A neighbor, attracted by the cries, was wounded by the last shot in the lunatic's weapon. Jose seized an ax and decapitated the wounded man. A raging savage now, Jose went home for more ammunition. Wiien his mother tried to stop him he felled her with the rifle. The sight of his mother lying prostrate pros-trate struck him with a strange new terror and he threw down his gun and stumbled away in the darkness. Gendarmes took up the pursuit. It was two days before he was run to earth and shot |
