Show Vikings dominate game but lose tough one to Clearfield Falcons Two plays later, Hynek kept the ball on the option, bouncing off one Falcon defender and rambling into the end zone to put Viewmont up 12-0 with 3:49 left in the half. The point after failed and Viewmont View-mont remained at 12. By this point, the packed Viewmont View-mont stands, coaches and players were riding high on what appeared to be an imminent Viking slaughter, but the fairy tale was about to transform into a nightmare. With only 33 seconds left in the half, Clearfield marched into the end zone as Viewmont had already done twice, only with one distinct difference. The Falcon point after kick sailed through the uprights, and suddenly the Viewmont 12-point lead was cut to five. Then disaster struck. With only 20 seconds left on the clock, Clearfield's Jeff Kirkman picked off a Hynek pass and rambled 45 yards for the touchdown, putting the Falcons up by one. Again, the point after kick was good, and Clearfield suddenly went into the locker room with a 14-12 halftime lead. Neither team was able to score in the second half; however, Viewmont View-mont did have a chance in the third quarter. But the chance and the Viking hopes sank as a Viewmont field goal attempt from the 35-yard line fell wide to the left. Viewmont, now 1-1 in region play, will host a talented Brighton team at home Friday. By G.BRETT HART F The Viewmont Vikings dominated the Clearfield Falcons' football team for nearly the entire game Friday-except for about a minute and a half at the end of the second quarter. Unfortunately for the Vikes, Clearfield decided to score all 14 of its points within that 90-second time period edging Viewmont, 14-12. 14-12. In what seemed a fairy tale come true, the Vikings manhandled the explosive Falcon offense from the beginning of the game. In spite of an impressive first series which almost culminated in a Falcon field goal, the Vikings kept Clearfield comfortably clear of its end zone. Viewmont scored first, led by Jason Hynek and running back Justin Tippetts, who both ran the ball impressively and combined for both Viking touchdowns. The Vikings' Vik-ings' scoring drive was highlighted by a 20-yard Tippetts gallop and capped off by a perfectly executed Hynek pass to Brian Coombs for the score. The point after attempt was blocked, a play that would come back to haunt Viewmont, and the Vikings took a 6-0 lead with less than two minutes gone in the second se-cond quarter. With hope, momentum and the lead, the Viking defense completely shut down the Falcons. Later in the second quarter, the Vikings took over on their own 30-yard 30-yard line. A powerful Tippetts run and a face masking penalty marched the Vikes to the Clearfield 24-yard line. r |
