'If we expect to be region champs like we've talked about, we need to be more disciplined. We fought hard but we weren't mental- ly ready for this game. We are going go-ing to be a good team, we're going to take care of it." By JOHN W. CANNON WOODS CROSS - The Woods Cross High football team managed a 1 3-0 shutout victory over the Judge Bulldogs last Friday. Though winners at the end of the game, the Wildcats suffered numerous penalties with one player being ejected from the game for fighting. "It was ugly," said coach John Haning. "We must have had 10,000 penalties," he said sarcastically. The Wildcats opened the game with an impressive drive that put them on the the Bulldog six yard line. Matt Hawkes got the call for a run up the middle. It would have been a real moment of glory for his first varsity game. The ball, however, found its freedom near the line of scrimmage as uncooperative defenders tore it loose and flung their bodies upon it for the fumble recovery. - --That was a "bad ' call on my part," said Haning. "Kevin Case had a really good night ... and I should have given the ball to him, I think Matt was having some first game jitters." Hawkes was later ejected from the game for fighting and will also be ineligible for this week's game. The Wildcats seemed to have a hard time controlling their tempers throughout the game, and it no doubt cost them. "I'm not very happy," said Han ing. "We were not very disciplined, we've got a lot of work to do. Sure we're glad for the win, but we're not going to beat very many teams if we play like this." Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter. In the second quarter Kevin Case broke free for a 25-yard run down to the one-yard line. Case scored the only touchdown of the night on a following one-yard run. Kyle Lavender kicked the extra point to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead at halftime. To open the second half Garret Atkins recovered a Bulldog fumble. Woods Cross capitalized, driving the length of the field and scoring on a 34-yard field goal kick by Kyle Lavender. |
