BLODGETT WOODS CROSS For the first time in the school's 15-year history, his-tory, the Woods Cross High Wildcats' Wild-cats' football team has made it to the state 4-A tournament. And when the 'Cats won their first playoff game last Friday, they did it in fine fashion a 28-7 victory vic-tory over the Cottonwood High Colts. Both teams entered the post- C season playoff game with identical l records, the best mark ever for Colts scored with only 20 seconds left in the first half and that was the only real threat they made all afternoon. after-noon. Woods Cross went up 14-0 with 6:35 left in the first half on a sustained sus-tained 80-yard drive which was climaxed cli-maxed with a rollout pass from Fuller Ful-ler to Watson after a pass interference interfer-ence the preceding play put the ball on the Colts'. 14. Kitt Rawlings, little brother of Chad, showed his talent on this touchdown drive with two nifty runs and a pass completion which 1 "The Rawlings brothers, along with Fuller and Watson, provided more than enough offensive power." Kitt Rawlings of Woods Cross put the moves on this Cottonwood defender, as did all the Wildcats in earning a convincing 28-7 victory over the Colts Friday afternoon. Woods Cross now makes its first-ever trip to the Rice Stadium turf for a quarterfinal battle with Alta Friday night at 6 p.m. the Wildcats who finished regular season play with a tie for the Region Re-gion Four championship. The Wildcats dominated the Colts both offensively and defensively, defen-sively, playing their best all-around game of the year. (See separate story for Friday pairings in the state 4-A quarterfinals.) Cottonwood took the opening kickoff and moved downfield like gangbusters. It appeared that the Wildcats would be in for a long afternoon. 1 But it wasn't to be. Woods Cross' defense stiffened and forced a Cottonwood punt out of bounds on the 'Cats 31-yard line. With Todd Fuller at quarterback replacing Chad Rawlings, the Wildcats moved 69 yards in about six plays with Fuller and Chadd Watson doing most of the ball carrying. car-rying. A Fuller-to-Shaun Culli-more Culli-more pass which Cullimore caught lying on his back moved the ball to the six. Fuller, on a quarterback keeper, came to within one-foot of the goal. . He then plunged over on a QB sneak, Dave Simon booted the first of four extra points. Fuller started and played most of the game at quarterback with Chad Rawlings being used as a running back and pass receiver. The change turned out to be a brilliant decision by Coach Steve Hill. The senior quarterback not only threw seven completions in 12 attempts but he also ran the ball for two touchdowns and passed for another. His combined rushing and passing total was 145 yards. Cottonwood broke free for a couple of long runs and long pass plays but each time the runner was brought down from behind by the Wildcats' speedy defense. The kept the drive alive. Cottonwood's lone score covered co-vered 42 yards after Julius Dicker-son Dicker-son recovered a fumble. Dicker-son, Dicker-son, who was the leading rusher for Cottonwood, gained yardage on the ground while Trent Hanson passes to Doug Knight, Terry Keehan and Derik Larson set up the score. A three-yard pass to Larson was good for the touchdown touch-down just seconds before intermission. intermis-sion. Woods Cross appeared to put the game on ice with 4:46 left in the third quarter when Jason Lund set up the tally with a recovered fumble fum-ble on the Colts' 28-yard line. A pass to Dave Simons moved the ball to the 15 and Watson carried car-ried to the eight. Kitt Rawlings fought his way to the one-foot line and Watson bulled his way to pay dirt. Fuller faked a run up the middle and then scampered 62 yards unmolested un-molested on a quarterback bootleg to score Woods Cross' fourth TD with only 2:24 left in the game. Even though Cottonwood advanced adv-anced the ball from their own one-yard one-yard line to the Wildcat 15, the Wildcat defense again stood up to the occasion and forced the Colts to give up the ball on downs after Donovan Anderson and Greg Poole threw Trent Hanson for a couple of long quarterback sacks. Woods Cross has been touted all season for its outstanding defense, but the Wildcat offense has had its problems, scoring fewer than 14 points per game average. But it was a different story Friday. Fri-day. The Rawlings brothers, along with Fuller and Watson, provided more than enough offensive power. |
