Show i . Rejoice: The gift of our liberty By REV. ERIC V. KAELBERER Pastor of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church This article comes on the heels of a wonderful celebration of our nation's na-tion's freedom and independence. We need to pause and remember the great cost paid by our forefathers fore-fathers to secure the liberties we now enjoy. To be a national patriot is to hold high the standard, the flag, the ideals, and the responsibilities of that nation. To be a Christian Patriot demands de-mands no less. It means to lift high the cross of Christ as our flag. It means to keep Christ's all sufficient sacrificial substitutionary death for our sins as the source of all hope and identity. It is the cross and that alone which is our identity as Christians. In our Lutheran Church, as in many denominations, there is a hymn in our hymnal which puts it so well. It is titled, "Lift High the Cross." The refrain of that great hymn is: "Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim, till all the word adore His sacred name." That, in a nutshell, is the meaning of Christian Patriotism. It is to rejoice re-joice in the gift of our liberty in Christ and ic desire to proclaim that freedom with boldness ?nd joy to everyone. Beloved reader, and you are beloved be-loved simply because Christ chose to love you by dying for you on the cross (John 3:16), may the celebra tion of independence not simply be national. It is my prayer that the true independence from guilt and from the curse of the law of God be yours. Anyone desiring to speak further on this issue is welcomed and encouraged to phone me at the church office at 295-7677. God bless you as you grow in Him.
