Both "duffers" and qnrips, can be found among the 219,500 golfers across the Clipper Day tripper State's golf courses offer something for everyone By GARY R. BLODGETT Utah's municipal and private golf courses provide a wide variety of golfing from the "easy" courses designed for new golfers and weekend "duffers," to the rugged rug-ged and championship-style courses for the sub-par golfers. According to the National Golf Foundation, there are approximately approxi-mately 219,500 golfers in Utah 13.5 percent of the total population which compares to only 9.5 percent per-cent on a national average. Howev- Q, Utah has only 80 courses to rve its golfing population compared com-pared to Nebraska having 179 courses for about 179,000 golfers. Whatever your choice, there is a golf course for you either in your own backyard or within, a day's drive from home or work. Some are among the most beautiful in the United States. Wasatch Mountain State Park out of Heber City, for example, has been rated by "Golf Digest" magazine maga-zine as one of the top 75 public courses in the nation. Nibley Park which was built in 1922 is one of the oldest golf courses still in existence. Although there have been some modifications modifica-tions on the course, it is still one of the toughest in the state to shoot par. In addition to the beauty and fine play of all the state's public courses, there are those that definitely defi-nitely rank in the "professional" class. Heading the list of these courses is Arnold Palmer's Jeremy Ranch, a semi-private course which annually hosts the Professional Profes-sional Golfers' Association (PGA) Senior Tour Event. This rugged, but scenic course, is located in a mountain setting with winding creeks that provide a summer haven for prestigious golfers. gol-fers. Park Meadows, another semi-private semi-private course designed by Jack Nicklaus, is Utah's longest course (7,338 yards) and is one of the most beautiful and challenging. Its deep bunkers, rolling mounds, and treacherous greens provide problems prob-lems for even the most talented golfers. gol-fers. But that's just the beginning. Utah's golf courses are spread throughout the state, hardly an hour's drive to a course. The Wasatch Front is flocked with public pub-lic courses, and there are four in Davis County. Ten more are located lo-cated in the Ogden area, including one in nearby Roy and one in Brigham City. Continuing north from Brigham City, there are nine more public courses with two located at Bear Lake, two in the little town of Tre- monton, and four in the Logan area (Cache County). To the south of Davis County, there are three beautiful courses in Heber Valley and eight more public pub-lic courses in the area between American Fork and Payson. In St. George a very popular retirement retire-ment and vacation site there are six public courses. The Salt Lake City area lists 15 public and three private courses. Several courses along the Wasatch Front are either private or restricted, res-tricted, such as the Hill Air Force Base golf course. Most golfers have their favorite course either because of convenience con-venience or because of the difficulty difficul-ty of play. But for those who like to "try something new" there are many golf courses available, several sever-al of them less than an hour's drive away and many more that can be played over the weekend. Because of Utah's varied terrain, ter-rain, the variety of golfing available is almost unlimited. Beginning in the Logan area, there is probably no more beautiful setting for a public course than at Bear Lake West. Other top courses in that area include Logan's private Country Club, overlooking beautiful beauti-ful Logan Canyon, and Sherwood Hills, a public course nestled in the mountains between Logan and Brigham City. The Provo area has at least three top-notch courses including Hobble Hob-ble Creek public course in Spring-ville, Spring-ville, Provo's private Riverside Country Club course, and Tri-City public course. In the St. George area, there is a beautiful array of scenic courses both mountainside and flatland courses. Of the six courses available, avail-able, only Bloomington Country Club restricts play to club mem bers and guests. g The variety of play holds true in the Salt Lake City area where courses can be played along hillsides, hill-sides, in canyons, across rivers, next to lakes, and out on the open flatlands. But nothing beats the play of golf courses right here in Davis County. Bountiful's city-owned course is as well-kept and has as beautiful a hillside setting as any golf course in Utah. The public course has steady play from golfers from miles around as well as being a popular playground for local golfers. Davis County Golf Course in Kaysville is another beautiful 18-hole 18-hole course which is very popular and accommodates several small tournaments each year. West Bountiful City has recently purchased purch-ased Spring Meadows Course and O Continued on next page ill v H w 4 i - it"'i- 4 Ur-rfv mA X!mmmU;ti '- '7T &'J o i to o o x a. 4 ;;-:.' v '?: V ' '.' - I v,. ; . r.-fi . x mimHtiHMbrpr J--.. !;. , , S2ljisBsl, &m . . , - v ' ' ., tT7 With lush vegetation and superb mountain ranges offering a backdrop. One course that is really played on the hillside is Valley View Course in Layton. It's a challenging challeng-ing course with a lot of open fairways fair-ways but sufficient hazards to make it enjoyable. Another popular course among club members and guests is Oak-ridge Oak-ridge Country Club, a private course located in West Farm-ington. Farm-ington.
