' ' - James Winchester, Aged 87, Dies After Being Hit by Street Car. James Winchester, 87 years of age. a pioneer, of 1849, was run down and so severely injured by a street car near his home at 3419 State street at 3:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon that he died an hour later without regaining consciousness. The car which caused the fatal injury to the aged man "was manned by Motor-man Motor-man H. A. D.worack and Conductor S. P. Kalb and was northbound from Murray. According to the motorman, Mr. Winchester Win-chester was vwaiklnic - northward on the pavement at the -s1de-'of the track and the gong; and whistle had been - sounded to warn "him' of the approach of the car. Suddenly, however, Mr. Winchester, whose hearing is said to- be defective, stepped directly in front of the car. The brakes wer.e im mediately applied and the fenrier sftoop was dropped, but the car was not brought to a standstill until the unfortunate man had been dragged for about twenty-five feet. As soon as possible - "the injured man wa5 removed to his - home, -where - he died about an hour later. Mr. Winchester was born in New York state, January 1?. 1831, $ud came to Utah in 1S49. Until the Infirmities of age prevented' him he was a farmer and. had always lesided in Salt Lake county. In the early days o( the territory of Utah Mr. Winchester won considerable renown re-nown as an Indian fighter. On Way .10, 1S52, he was married to Elizabeth Cris-mon. Cris-mon. who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Winchester Win-chester celebrated the slxty-3ixth anniversary anni-versary of their wedding in May of the present year. Mrs. Winchester was SS years of age on February 11 last. In addition to the "widow, Mr. Winchester Win-chester is survived by five sons, t nree daughters, twenty grandchildren, twenty-four great -grand children and seven great-great -grand children. Airangements for the funeral have not been made. |
