Show EXPERT OF WESTERN UNION AR RIVES IN OGDEN will bore holes in the line across the lake in an experiment to be made from fridays standard chief engineer finn of the western union cable service with headquarters in new york arrived in the city this morning to test the new cable over the lucin cutoff cut off and to put in operation an experiment that he believes mill overcome a difficulty that the company have been having engineer finn said this morning we have had trouble with the cable for some time and awhile ago I 1 came out and made some changes the trouble then nas fao wires in the cable could not be used at the same time owing to the presence of a disturbing current when more than one wire was in operation at the time I 1 utilized several conductors and two wires turning thy disturbing current into the ground there are nineteen wires in the cable which is thirty five miles in length and there has been considerable retardation much of the same nature as has been found in the ocean cables now it is a well known fact that in ocean cables when there Is a leak the retardation Is less and I 1 believe that a distributed leakage would aid matters when the cable was built it was opened up every halt mile and connected with test boxes now I 1 propose to open up the cable again by boring little holes aery halt mile and inserting a small composition rod of carbon and graphite if high resistance and run the disturbing current into the ground this mr finn believes will overcome the difficulty and at the same time not diminish the current for a long time mr finn says he has been looking tor an opportunity to test hla idea and that the trouble with the cutoff cut off cable is the first chance that he has had and that if it asa success it will be adopted on all of tho western union cables and probably on every aerial cable in the country besides can be used to greatly increase the efficiency of the service of all telegraph lines |
