Show congregationalists have no sympathy with dh gladdens crusade against john D rockefellers Rocke fellers donation to the church seattle wash sept 14 A strong sentiment has been expressed among he ol 01 abo american board 0 commissioners for foreign missions 0 tho congregational church now in session in this city against the icso atlon that has been prepared by dr washington gladden to present to tho convention in his fight against tainted money the resolution has not been presented to the convention but the general sentiment among the members Is tho resolution would be lost by an overwhelming wh elming majority it presented in view of the sentiment that has been expressed by tho members it is impossible to state what action will be taken by dr gladden dr gladden has not reached the city as yet although the new england party strong arrived in portland his morning the most prominent among the new englanders who arrived this morning is G henry whitcomb chairman of the prudential committee to which he question ot tainted money was referred somo weeks ago mr whitcomb has expressed himself as strongly opposed to the adoption of any resolution by tho board dealing with the question and the committee 0 which he Is chairman will recommend that no action 0 any character be taken in outlining his position on the question sir whitcomb made the following statement 1 I do not kaow what dr gladden proposes to da the incident la really closed though ot course tho question can be brought ap under the head of new business or can be interjected at almost any time we are bound to consider any matter that is proposed no matter how radical or how absurd it might be but everyone almost save dr gladden considers that matter settled A canvass of the members ot the board showed a short time ago that 90 per cent of the members were opposed to dr gladdens position it he brings up the question it will be quickly disposed ot the prudential committee cannot be placed in the position ot looking up a mans history and his family record whenever he offers money to carry on the work ot the church dr gladdens resolution would malte it necessary tor ibe board to weigh the standing of every man and to put the committee in the position of censoring every dona alon that cannot be done and I 1 do abot believe the board will suggest it most of the time of the board during the convention in this city will be taken up with the consideration of the question of maintenance of foreign missions according to the statement of mr whitcomb there was a deficit at the end of the last fiscal year of and the question of financing the missions which the board has in the field will be the most important to consider among the members who reached abo city from boston this morning are a number of missionaries who will sail from this city on september 30 tor japan these missionaries hav beon invited to appear before the board and tell of the work that has been done in the past and the plans tor the future tor japan the annual review of the work of the board in the different countries in which missions have been established was presented to the convention this morning the review dealt with japan turkey india and ceylon china papal lanag and africa touching briefly on each country mentioned jn the review the report in substance follows the japan mission ot tho board covering twelve ot the largest ditlea and strategic centers in the empire has assumed new importance from the events ot the past year this little island empire Is already reckoned aa a new and vital force in all the affairs ot the far east her very location gives her the command ot the sea approaches pro aches of korea manchuria and china north ot hongtong Hong kong the japa sese alono can understand the characteristics acte of the koreans and the chinese tho chinese language presents no insuperable barriers and to the chinaman the little japanese is not a foreign devil already chinese students are said to be in the schools of japan and china is rapidly filling with japanese professors and teachers and schools of lower grade and japanese editors are connected with chinese journals A conquest ot china by japan la already in full operation in some respects turkey is the most interesting mission country in the world the review continues one leaon for this is that constantinople is the capital and haild II 11 is the coltan not only ot all the turkeys but also the head and center ot mohammedan power of the world so long as the sultan of turkey governs the two sacred cities of mecca and medina and so long as the precious relics 0 the prophet med are in bis keeping so long will the edans in turkey africa persia india and china look to him as the visible head of islam it is worth much as a strategic move to have a strong aggressive christian work center at constanel Const antl nople within plain sight of the sultans palace and conducted under per mission granted by him speaking of china the review says more changes are taking place this year in the opinions judgments and purposes of the leaders of china than have transpired there during the last century china is beginning to ob berve and think in terms of modern national life she is beginning to move under the impulse of modern national aspiration tho strength ot that mighty country cannot be over estimated her resources of wealth men and intelligence are beyond our power to tabulate at tho present time of india and Ct eylon the review ays these are ahe olivest oli lest most ma aured and settled missions under this board hero tor fifty years thero has been operation cooperation co from the government and a general welcome from tho people persecutions have arisen almost entirely from tho conflict of christian principles with caste regulations the missionary Is honored by all classes and trusted by the government officials in many respects india and ceylon might be called tho mission arys paradise continuing tho report says in a marked degree our work in mexico spain and austria is a demonstration on of tha fruits of simple christianity rather than tho teaching of a creed the effort of the missionaries Is directed to demonstrate that true religion demands ot its followers purity righteousness truth and intelligence and that it grants to them liberty of conscience while imposing upon them responsibility for individual acts hardly a month passes without some demonstration of advance the large and influential liberal party of spain aas not beon slow to recognize that the principles taught by the missionaries promise most tor the intelligent advancement of ahe kingdom conces mado during tho year giving to protestants larger liberties to worship show that the king recognizes in a measure at least that they are not an injury to the country the review concludes as follows in africa we are at work among he most virile and aggressive race in all that great continent the zulus are an ambitious and progressive people they are not content to dwell n idleness idl enesa in their kraals supported jy the labors of their women they seek education they push out in commercial and industrial endeavor always eager and always accumulating n the mining districts ot the south they are found in largo numbers from a wide expanse of territory in the in gerior here they are most eager and appreciative listeners to the missionary teacher and the christian preacher |
