Show - Final Bryce Rodeos For Season Set For Weekend The upcoming Labor Day weekend week-end signals the end of summer for most people, with recent nippy mornings testifying to the fall months ahead. Bryce Canyon Rodeo will herald the season's end with its season-ending "Buckle Night" as prizes are awarded to those hardy participants who have who have accumulated the most points over the past three months. Antimony's Dave Roberts is expected ex-pected to take the bareback buckle as he stays out in front of the earlier ear-lier lead cowboy Shawn Bagley whose two-week trip to the National High School Rodeo finals in Oklahoma City was costly in terms of points at Bryce but rewarding reward-ing nevertheless as he took 31 out of the 190 entrants in Oklahoma. Fans are betting on Tex Carter, Cedar City, to take the saddle bronc buckle. Carter was last summer's See Bryce Rodeo Page 7A Final Bryce Rodeos Of Season Set From Page 6A saddle bronc champ and is in the lead again this year, with Ted Hurst of Henrieville a close second. The two have seesawed back and forth all season. Nineteen-year-old Lance Miller of Panguitch has been the leading bull rider all season. The skilled bull rider has been riding at Southern South-ern Utah University rodeo events, so no surprises are expected. Shantel Rich of Bryce is out in front in barrel racing, with young Summer Lee Mecham, who has been riding since she was 3, close behind. Last year's winner McLain Mecham has the lead again this year in calf roping, but Zeke Nielsen is a close second. Team ropers John Henry Mecham and Zeke Nielsen are way out in front. This is Mecham's third year in the top spot and Nielsen's first. To be named "All Around Champ," the cowboy has to have ridden in either two roping event and one rough stock (bareback, saddle sad-dle bronc, or bull riding) event during dur-ing the season or two rough stock and one roping event over the four-month four-month span of the rodeo season. Zeke Nielsen will probably grab the all around top spot. Rodeo secretary Joni Mecham says that next year's rodeo is expected ex-pected to feature buckles for the younger rodeo riders, for those under un-der 9 who ride the sheep and those " 9-12 who ride the calves and steers. This season's rodeo has averaged 40-50 riders a night with from 300 to 450 spectators enjoying the sport. The rodeo is operated by John Henry Mecham and Zeke Nielsen. |
