Since I don't have an opportunity to personally visit with I j ' -h f vou' I wiH 06 writing adtorials periodically to advise you ! I of telecommunications issues. If this information prompts ques- 1 1 I tions or comments, you are welcome to call me at 673-7480 Gary Harrison t, m r ' . . . . (free call) in St. George. Community Affairs Manager ' Of specific interest to our customers and U S WEST is our recent $ 3 1 .2 million rate increase request. The largest portion of the request is due to na- , tionally mandated accounting changes which require new revenues to implement, as well as other accounting adjustments that insure revenues and expenses are made in accordance accor-dance with accepted accounting principles. Some 75 of the requested revenues will be used to offset the additional expenses ex-penses due to the accounting changes. The net impact on U S WEST Communications' earnings will be zero. Only $ 7.6 million of the request would result in additional earnings earn-ings for U S WEST. We believe the increase is justified so we can pay an adequate return to our stockholders. It is essential to maintain stockholder confidence in our company and to attract the capital investments used to maintain and improve the telecommunications infrastructure needed for further economic development of Utah. Our last rate increase was in 1985. Since 1986, we have returned $ 95 million to our customers in the form of rate reductions. In just the last two years we have invested almost $ 250 million in the state. This makes our investment in the last 10 years total approximately $ 1.1 billion to add nearly 200,000 new lines in support of Utah's strong economic growth. During this time of unparalleled growth, we have continued to im-. im-. prove efficiencies within the business At the present time, it takes one employee to serve every 245 lines in the state, compared to 10 years ago when one employee served only 9 1 1 lines. Our proposal would set basic rates for residential telephone service with unlimited unlim-ited local calling at approximately $ 10 to $ 18 per month, depending on where you live. This is close to the same rate you paid for service back in 1984.
