Priska Brass Rubbings Displayed At Art Center ESCALANTE "Brass rubbings rub-bings and Other Things" is the subject sub-ject of the Escalante Art Center display dis-play for the month of September. The pieces were created by Harriet Washburn Priska and her mother, Winifred Washburn of Pacifica, Calif. Fourteenth and Fifteenth Century Cen-tury Memorial Brasses were rubbed with a special crayon on special paper, pa-per, much as one might put paper on a penny and make a copy by rubbing a pencil over it. In the 1960's and 1970's this was a popular popu-lar pursuit for tourists in Europe. The brasses show the armor and dress of the Middle Ages and are quite distinctive. Artist Harriet Priska also made rubbings on such things as manhole covers from the streets of London, ancient bookcov-ers bookcov-ers and a variety of other interesting surfaces. |
