Weed Contest Winners Four youngsters captured coveted prizes for collecting the most weeds in the Garfield County's recent weed abatement contest. County officials decided it would be less expensive to hold the contest and provide prizes than to try to spray county wide. Courthouse employee Camille Moore set up the contest for local youth, with the opportunity to win a Sears bicycle or long-range squirt gun for the four bringing in the most musk thistle blossoms. The contest was advertised by poster and began at the county fair, ending on Aug. 24. Winners included Michael Whiting, son of George and Vickie Whiting, who collected 306 pounds; Amanda Barney, daughter of Curtis and Cindy Barney, 144 pounds; Skyler Dalton, son of Mike and Chris Dalton, 32 pounds; and Cache Miller, son of Jim and June Ann Miller, 24 pounds. Moore said it would have cost the county three times the cost of the prizes to spray for teh same amount of weeds. Each winners also received tickets for free sno-Ocones for family members to be used at JoJo's Sno-Cones. |
