Show Two 9-Year-Olds Hurt In Accident Two 9-year-olds were critically injured Aug. 26 in a four-wheeler accident near Crawford Pass south of Tropic Reservoir where there family was on a camping trip. Brad Checkets and Catherine Murray, both Salt Lake City, were riding double on their four-wheeler when it struck a water erosion control bar, became airborne and rolled twice when it hit the ground. The two were being followed by a 13-year-old friend on his four-wheeler four-wheeler who immediately headed back to camp for help. The two injured youngsters were transported by private vehicle to Foster's on Highway 12. There the more critically injured boy, who had sustained substantial head injuries from the handlebars of the fourwheeler, was transferred to the Bryce Valley ambulance and transported to Garfield Memorial Hospital. The little girl, whose leg had been broken near the hip, was taken in the private vehicle to the hospital in Panguitch. Both children were stabilized and then lifeflighted at 3:50 p.m. to Primary Childrens Hospital in Salt Lake City. Sheriff Than Cooper who investigated the accident said the youngsters may have been going too fast for the terrain. He said they would have sustained fewer and less serious injuries if they had been wearing protective helmets and safety gear.
