Show Card Room Likely To Lose License With Gambling Charge Complaint Piled After Calit'ornian Is Arrested on Cheek Forgery and Demands Settlement For Chips In House. The filing of a complaint and arrest of Don Chipman yesterday afternoon on a charge of keeping a gambling house is almost sure to spell the end of the licensed card rooms in American Ameri-can Fork which Mr. Chipman has operated for about two years. As the following details indicate quite a fast gambling joint has been flourishing flourish-ing here under the guise of a licensed card room. The arrest of Mr. Chipman followed follow-ed a ser.ies of events. As reported a Mr. Leonard Sweeney, who had been given a ride here from California Califor-nia got into the game at the card rooms. He needed money and produced pro-duced a $69.00 check of the Bruce Mc' Cormick company of Victorville, California, which after being indorsed indors-ed by a local man was cashed at a local store. In the mean time another an-other check had been forged and cashed at another local store. Learning of the forged check local officers made an investigation of other business houses to determine if other checks had been cashed. They discovered the California check which had been passed by the same man and telegraphed there to find out the statis of things. A telegram was received by the county sheriff that said Sweeney was wanted there on a burglary charge and requested his arrest. Local officers immediately went in search of the man locating him in the card room. When arrested he demanded de-manded pay for the chips he had in his possession. He was hurried off to the City hall where it is alleged Don Chipman apeared with about eighteen dollars saying this belonged to the fellow in payment of the chips. With this evidence in their hands the city officers proceeded to draw a complaint which was served yesterday yester-day afternoon. Chipman pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $75 bail and the hearing set tor Monday at 10 a. m. |
