Show Record encourages graduates to enjoy life Congratulations Cedar, Parowan and Enterprise high school classes of 1982! You have finally reached one of the first major goals of your life, an accomplishment well worth congratulations, and certainly worth savoring. Because it is high school graduation time and because of the inherent nature of such an event, you seniors have probably already heard a number of words of advice from friends and family, and you will probably hear a number of others during the next couple of weeks. So, we at the Record are not sure that we could add anything more valuable than what you have already heard. Certainly graduation congratulations bring out the verboseness in all of us. Thus, all we would add (and we'll keep it short) is this: lean back and enjoy it. It only happens once, and, believe it or not, most of that advice you are hearing is well-founded. Ralph Waldo Emerson once described life 'as a stream of clear water, quickly flowing over the shining pebbles and sand on the bottom. It all looks so inviting and yet the water is flowing by so quickly that it is hard to see it well. His advice for enjoying life was not to stick in our hands to retrieve the pebbles and sand off the bottom for a better look. The pebbles will always be their for everyone's enjoyment, unless we remove them. Then, once the stream bed is disturbed, the picture is changed, and what we wanted to see is no longer there. Instead, he advices that we lean over and gently sip, gently but deeply, the cool waters as they flow by. This doesn't disturb the stream bed and disturbs the flowing water only slightly. But we are able to enjoy the refreshment of the water or of life and then lean back and still see it moving by. Such is this occasion. It is flowing by quickly and won't be here at all next week. Now is the time to drink the water. Drink deeply so as to enjoy it thoroughly, but drink carefully so as not to destroy the experience, the memories for the rest of your life, as experiences continue to flow by. As the popular song says, you will never pass this way again; and if the fuss everyone is making, if the music, the programs, the caps and gowns, seem a bit much for you, remember that the reason for such fuss and pomp is to make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience. So enjoy it. A special time of your life is about to end, a time that will never be repeated in any way again. College or trade school graduation will not be the same. Class reunions will not have this importance. im-portance. And, once again, congratulations seniors. |
