Show It IFIN MANILA Several of the Utah Volunteers Are Coming Home f If I THEY LEFT ON THE OHIO J l I t 1 GALLANT CHICK VAHTATT AND r t r SNYDER AMO2TG THEM roniotioa of Wedgwood Battery A l I Hen Disconsolate Because They j Have lost Dick Young Funeral 1 of Corporal larsen Christmas I Boxes Ahead of me L J + i Manila Dee 14Although not Identified j Iden-tified with the battery organizations I from Utah being in the regulars but baiug still a Utah min I suppose some points I regarding those organizations will I k prove qf interest I The health of the American troops i i generally including those of the Utah batteries is not good In fact sickness is undeniably on the increase There are hospitals all over town and they I aie full t The promotion of Lieutenant Wedgwood I Wedg-wood to the captaincy of battery A has not apparently encouraged the i men although when he finally gets up I on military matters it may have a good effect From my observation it would seem that he is working his men I altogether too hard for this climate They used to betha happiest crowd in l the city of Manila with an esprit de I corps that was delightful and made of I them a model organization Today they never crack a smile aId since l Major Young left them are going back i morally and in drill I is claimed that the not only increases their other duties I du-ties but gives them an extra drill every day under his management My opportunities for talking with the men r have not been numerous but they seem sincE Major Young left them to be completely discouraged I was present last Sunday when the Utah men buried their gallant comrade Corporal George O Larsen He was laid at rest with all the honors of Avar 1 and deserved all he got and a good deal more than could be given him The First Colorado band led with the gun he worked on in the battle of Malate the coffin being carried on the caisson J Every commissioned officer of batteries A and B with the noncoms next then I i battery A and battery B followed Corporal Larsen seemed to be respected re-spected by all and his record was without I with-out a blemish May he rest in peace Nearly aJl the Utah men who are in I I the regulars were present at the fun fu-n ral I Six men discharged from the Utah batteries leave for home tomorrow They are gallant Charles E Varian of I battery A Jacob Hess of battery B Salt Lake Corporal Anderson battery B Logan Bismarck Snyder battery A i Ogden Willard Call battery A and J I J Holbrook Bountiful They go on the 1 Ohio REGULAR |
