society girl The romance Is a story of lovo lyhich actually had its beginning and its happy consummation before the of the footlights and In the scenes comedy of the play There are several love scehcs between Marjorie and Richard Heatherly in the farce and what was more natural than that they should b come real The other members of the company gradually became aware of the warmth and apparent Hanuenod to Jones rn be the last given by Mr Clarke in Salt Lake as ho has secured a new comedy which will be given an elaborate production next season an < l which he hopes to present here net winter 0 0 0 On account of the typographical work bPinc done by foreigners a funny example of this Is contained In Don C Mussers paper Freedom which copies an editorial irom The Herald The article a i origin ally appeared stated that tho Utah boys had served their country well etc Freedom Free-dom publishes it this way They have served their country hell and covered themselves with glory It was the Span Ish however that the Utah boys served with that article < w 0 Speaking of romances Salt Lake now ana then develops a very good one But I the latest is the story a true story of a hotel employee in this city who owns the I distinction of having been actually kid naped and that too by his own mother It is the old story of an unhappy union 3 divorce the custody of the minor son and last but not least the devotion of a mothers love The story runs as follows fol-lows In an eastern state say fifteen years ago a couple were married and all that was bright was before them Ho had money some money she had none but there was nothing apparently to cause discord here However ere n year had gone trifling differences arose but when a baby boy made his appearance he was thought l bag eh one link which would bind them closer together in short make them inseparable Each grew to love the boy but the link was all a dream The wife finally secured a divorce granting her the custody of the child and here Is the part in which the boy figures so conspicuously YcR T hf he sp nor I spicuously I The father was not prone to give him up and kept his whereabouts unknown to the wife who appealed to the courts without avail But one day a kind providence le her to a clue She was her own detective and a short time afterward the plucky little woman obtained ob-tained help and kidnaped the child employing em-ploying In the work all the implements of the old detective stories cab driver dark night and all She fled to another stato and once there defied her husband who made several attempts to regain the child now grown to be a young man capable of managing himself Last year mother and son came here for the health of the latter and are here yet Mrs is a professional trained nurse the young man as above stated a hotel employee The poor manner in which some of the sidewalks along Main and some of the cross streets have been bushhammered is commented on by nearly everybody who have any taxes to pay In some places the walks have been practicallly ruined the firm cement layer on top having hav-ing been pounded awjiy leaving nothing but the foundation of pea gravel In looking over the path made by the workmen work-men one comes to the conclusion that picks instead of hammers have been used or else the men were not Instructed how to do the work jiroperly Some of I the wallcs stand very little hammering on account of the poor base but even where tho foundation Is firm the job is anything but a thing of beauty Of course if the main purpose a to roughen the walks then tho contractor has succeeded admirably for there is no possible chance of slipping once firmly footed on the hammered portion But experts say i will only be a question of a short time until a good many of the walks will have unt overhauled o 0 < > There is a restaurant on Main street which has the following on its bill of fare Our special day Hot mince pie 10 cents per cut Perhaps this is another Chl rntt way of bidding for oriental trade The I Boiled Dinner club may make an investi gallon mae < > > < 0 Rumors are going the rounds to the effect ef-fect that an effort will be made to recreate re-create the office of captain of police A good many who keep well posted on police affairs think n bill will be Introduced in the legislature to accomplish this end Chief Pratt is credited wit nursing the hope that such a measure can be passed in which event gossippers have it Harry Foal once sergeant of police would be appointed Mr Fords visit to the city ms lent about the only color to the story that plans are now being mapped out to push this piece of legislation through |
