Show 4 CHICAGO SCHOOL REFORMS After twelve months of investigation and meditation the commission appointed pointed by the mayor of Chicago to revise the system and reorganize the administration of city schools has made a repot Most of the changes proposed as indicated In-dicated in a synopsis of the report Stout St-out are o little interest to a city the size of Salt Lake as they contemplate an increased membership on the board of education a lengthening of official terms and so on But the fact that the commission has recommended the general introduction of kindergartens in the public school system a matter we have been recommending recom-mending for cities of the first and second sec-ond class in Utah is of general interest Manual training and commercial work in the high school department are proposed pos which Is another excellent departure de-parture Manual training has been neglected too long in many of the cities The needs of the hour are for industrial education nes ucation This is recognized by the government gov-ernment Ll the establishment o institutions insti-tutions of this character in the several states I must be recognized by the cities where hundreds of bqys and girls do not have an opportunity to attend at-tend industrial colleges Outside of these particulars the commission mission discovered little of value to the city schools of Utah although the entire tire report will doubtless be read with interest in many cities and the information in-formation it contains may aid in the perfection of the city school system allover over the country |
