yV President Elder Charles George Q Cannon Cale Savage Bishop Empey Apostle Grant and Hany Others + I 5 5 The funeral of the late Elder George Goddard conducted yesterday by his colaborers and friends was a sad and notable event In the history of the Mormon church for the man was universally versally loved and the work that he ha devoted most of his life tothe development de-velopment of the Sunday schools will follow him The obsequies attending the burial of the veteran Sunday school worker were i very impressive and an evidence of his i universal popularity a manifestation II of the high esteem in which the deceased de-ceased was held was the attendance i Long before the hour set for the funeral fu-neral ceremonies the tabernacle was I I I filled to the a oar and as time passed the throng increased Promptly at 2 oclock the cortege reached the tabernacle I taber-nacle when the casket was removed from the hearse and carried to the altar J al-tar with the great organ pouring out a flood of solemn music over the vast congregation The pallbearers were Karl G Maeser George Reynolds J W Summerhays C R Savage N A Empey William Naylor and William L Binder all of whom were more or less al associated in Sabbath school work with the deceased j 1 Following the casket were the I mouners who occupied the first three seats on each side of the center aisle On either side directly behind the more I intimate friends the Sunday School union board and their families and the old folks committee were seated while at the back toward the rear of the auditorium were the old folks In a body The Sunday school teachers and children occupied the gallery and what space was not utilized by the organizations or-ganizations named was quickly filled by admiring finds and the general public 0 The decorations were simple yet effective ef-fective in their simplicity The great oran and the pulpits were all draped in dovewhite crape The altar upon which the casket lay I was adored with floral offerings including a beautiful beau-tiful harp from Weber county and alike a-like emblem from Salt Lake President George Q Cannon announced an-nounced the first hymn God Moves in a MysterIous Way His Wonders to Perform the congregation standing during the singing Apostle Teasdale uttered a fervent prayer eulogistic of the deceased for his energy and faith fulness energ I In Our Lovely Deseret I a prime favorite fa-vorite of the dead veteran was next I rendered by the choir and school chil i dren who gave to the simple melody an I interpretation never before equaled I A telegram was read announcing I I that St George stake would hold memorial me-morial services for the dead elder after j 4 j which Bishop Empey of the Thirteenth ward where Elder Goddard resided J addressed the congregation He said I I in part I I George Goddard has been all a faithful man could be faithful al 31 in every respect true to every call His j I record is a perfect one and should be Ian ian i-an example for everybody I Bishop Empey recited some interest i ing incidents in the life of Elder God 1 f aara growing out of their long acquaintance ac-quaintance and laid special stress upon the deceaseds kindness to the poor I Karl G Maeser was the second speaker His remarks were of a tender character denoting a staunch friendship Pt friend-ship for his colaborer At times the tmes venerable doctors eyes moistened and he found it difficult to proceed Of his acquaintance with the deceased Dr Maeser said My heart is full and I have been struggling and striving to I keep my mind on other things that I might not break down We have traveled trav-eled together many thousands of miles ve have preached together we have talked yes we have prayed to gether we have confided in each other as perhaps no other friends could and to speak of him now is the most dim cult task ever assigned to me His life has been one great example a grand personification of the principles he represents There was but one George Goddard He cannot be compared with b compare wih any other man Ah what an object lesson lesn my brothers and sisters what a record he leaves behind him Always at his post never wavering never failing and as I see his chair now draped in white I cannot realize that he has gone from our must But he vil he received in the other world with open nee he will continue his labors and further glorify his name I pray God that his t family may be reconciled I pray that the spirit may rest upon the ret UPO community commu-nity who suSan a great loss in his being called home C R Savage spoke of Elder R Svube Elde God dards energy in laboring in behalf of the old folks He related I Gil folk that in 1875 lIe eablse the old folks excursions I excur-sions He was foremost always in sug gesting moves for the comfort of his fellow men His heart was right his head clear his judgment profound continued Elder Savage His obligation he held as sacred a his faith In God He leaves a example which may well be emu lated by our boys eu Eder George Reynolds of the Sun day school bad said Brother God dards light speaks for itself I review his cbanu from a Sunday school stand poirt He was a man of rare and peculiar gifts and the world IE batter for his coming into it He left his mark upon the world and when he enters the cc cal city thousands of voices I will gladly proclaim the coming of Brother Goddard Apostle Heber J Grant Aposte Hebe in recount ing the noWe traits of the deceased move his hearers more probably than any other speaker hI cannot remem ber when 1 did not know ad re love George Goddard said he in the course Of his remarks I have known Gur5 my life and I know o no man for whom I feJt more regard or had more rS more confidence in condee George God was greatly instrumental in directing my footsteps into the straight and narrow path Of late I would speak to him and try to dissuade him from going on long journeys in his enfeebled S condition Then tears would come into his eyes To the last day of his life he fet that his spirit was young and fet siri We was ever anxious to pursue his labors I loved him concluded Apostle Grant I shall do all I can to perpetuate per-petuate his noble name W H Foster assisted by the choir rendered Whos on the Lords Side Who song another favorite Sunday school Eider Seymour B Young had known George Goddard since 1S57 and testified to his worth Jn crossing the plains with I liandcart trains He performed his labors as only George Goddard could I perform them Praise him honor him crown him concluded the speaker I President George Q Cannon said he az had contemplated the demise of Elder Goddard fo some time past and had wondered who could take his place I I could see no one he continued so cntnuc who possessed the remarkable gifts of George Goddard I always have ad J k Co 1 mired his manner of addressing a congregation con-gregation for he never wearied his hearers and In this r believe laid partly the secret of his success with the Sunday school children I is a example that should live in our minds Gectrgo Goddards labors have not ended He Is 83 years old arid ha fled his mission here but will
