Show Uintah Basin Sheltered Workshop funds cut The Uintah Basin Area Vocational Center will terminate two staff members within the Sheltered Workshop Department as of July 11. These reductions are necessary as a result of losing approximately $22,000 of Federal Handicapped funds administered ad-ministered by the Utah State Board for Vocational Education, according to Marlin Johnson, UBAVC director. The funding loss occurred because of a new funding formula used by the State Board. The new formula allocates money on the basis of unemployment percentage, county tax valuations, depressed area factors and population. The Uintah Basin does not fair well in any of these factors, said Johnson. The reduction represents approximately ap-proximately a one-third cut in staff and students. Ten to fifteen handicapped students will be refused in order to maintain proper student to staff ratio. This action is unfortunate as a growing need does exist in the Basin for services to the handicapped. A new handicapped facility resulting from several years of local fund raising and promotion "will be ready to move into in early August. The facility was funded by Basin School Districts, counties, cities and State and Federal funds. The building was constructed by UBAVC students and staff. The handicapped han-dicapped students played a major part in the construction, Johnson reported. The new facility is a 5000 sq. ft. building placed west of the main building on the UBAVC campus located on the Uintah-Duchesne County line. Material costs and required subcontracts sub-contracts for building reached $200,000. |
