Show SPORTS FLASHBACKS Uintah Utes collect first place in track meet The sport oi track has always been a popular activity in the Uintah Basin and a track story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on April 22, 1954. In scoring the top 114:l4 points, the Utes won seven first places, which went to Tom Wardell, Earl Gross, Duane Hall, Ronnie Hatch, Coy Kanistanaux and the Uintah teams in the medley and mile relays. In second place was Union High School with 94 '4 points, Rangely 4F.i, Duchesne 29' 2, Tabiona 13, and Altamont8:14. The Utes picked up 92 2 points. Union was second with 85 Va points; North Emery, 42; South Emery 33,; Duchesne 25V,; Green River! i0J4; Tabiona, 10 and Grant, 3. The Ute mile relay team, consisting of Cliff Merkley, Dean Lundell, Rex Smuin and Neldon Hacking broke the record with a 3:44.4 time. Staker of North Emery set a new record in the 440 in '53.2 and Gines of Union set a new record in the low hurdles at 21.3. UTES WIN FIVE PLACES AT STATE MEET Uintah High School placed five times in the State Class B track and field meet at the University of Utah Stadium last Saturday to make 12th spot among 24 teams. Payson edged Delta for first place, 32 to 31. Placing for Uintah were: Duane Hall rL m I!?6 mile run; Merlin Richens, fifth in the 880 yard run; and Terry Anderson, tied with Haun of Murray for fifth in the pole vault. Uintah's medley relay team was third and mile relay - team was fourth. |
