The first casualty to the city's newly returned old-fashioned streetlights on Main Street occurred last Friday morning when an out-of-control Dodge pick-up knocked over a recently-placed pole in front of Dolly's bookstore. According to reports, David Richards parked the car near the Paint Bucket paint store and went inside, leaving his five year old son in the cab. The youngster, apparently playing pretend-driver, took the wheel and disengaged the automatic transmission out of parking gear. The truck rolled up onto the curb and travelled 44 feet before striking the pole dead-center. The boy escaped with only a bump on the head, but the pick-up sustained an estimated $450 damage. Damage to the pole, which suffered a clean crack to its base, was set at $350. galactic rip-off A 1968 Ford Galaxie was reported stolen early Saturday morning from the parking lot of the Homestake condos. A 1977 Toyota Landcruiser sustained $300 damage last Wednesday evening when it was struck by a 1962 Chevy Impala at the intersection of Park Avenue and 12th Street. Police report the Impala was making a right turn onto 12th Street but turned too wide and hit the Landcruiser, which had stopped to make a turn onto Park Avenue. kinder crash A 1976 Chevy pick-up and a 1969 Jeep Wagoneer sustained $300 damage each when they collided last Friday evening on Main Street in front of the Kindersport. According to reports, the pick-up was pulling onto Main Street from the Kindersport parking lot to make a right turn, but went too far into the oncoming traffic lane and struck the Jeep, which was travelling up the street in a normal fashion. |
