Show Skyliawks Beat Panthers Sunday Center-Forward Alex Holmsen scored first for the Panthers but the Kickers Skyhawks came back with three more and won an extremely physical soccer match at Sunnyside Park last Sunday morning. Park City -was initially handicapped handi-capped by the absence of their starting fullbacks, but only a series of bad breaks cemented the loss. Right-Inside Steve Toly missed four potential goals with shots that soared over the goalpost; the second Kicker goal was scored while all eyes were on an injured Scott Williams; and there was some question about an indirect penalty kick being legal that gave the opposition their final goal. But the Panthers played a rugged, grueling match against a team of big, tough players. The guts play of the game had to be when Holmsen went up with the Skyhawk goalie to try and head the ball into the cage on a corner kick and came down flat on his back with contusions to the face and elbows. The final regular season game will be this Saturday at Sugar- house Park in Salt Lake City at 11:30 a.m. against Wasatch, whom the Panthers defeated two weeks ago. Immediately following will be a quarter-final tournament game against second-division team Golden Spikers. If, as expected, the Panthers get past the Spikers, they will be in excellent position to gain a high finish in the Utah Junior Soccer Association knockout tournament. tourna-ment. This will be a fine achievement for a first-year team that has been knocking heads against Division One teams all season. |
