"The Woman's Touch" Caring for children is a phrase with two meanings, and we mean both of them. We mean taking care of their needs and wants, and we mean being fond of them, too. The two go together. As you care for children in the physical sense of doing things for them, you learn to love and to enjoy them, It works the other way around, too. When you really care for children in the sense of loving them, you are more apt to take care of them with more understanding under-standing of how things look from a child's eye view. Children need loving quite as much as they need food. Babies who are cuddled and held close while they are being fed grow faster and better than those who have a bottle propped up for them to suck from. This is not just a sentimental old wives' tale, but is supported by sound evidence from careful studies. All along the way, children need loving. Warm, open contact with people in expressed ex-pressed affection is an essential to growth. There is no danger of spoiling a rose plant by providing pro-viding the elements essential for its growth! We need to love children, too. As we give them our love, we are nourished and grow ourselves. our-selves. This warm satisfaction is beautifully expressed in the little poem below: TWO-AND-A-HALF by Dorothy Uncle Hold him a little longer, Rock him a little more; Tell him another story, (You've only told him four.) Let him sleep on your shoulder, Rejoice in his happy smile; He is only two-and-a-Jialf For such a little while ! As long as a person lives he needs to feel that he is loved. Love expressions shift as people grow, but the basic need remains essentially the same throughout all of life. At every age, humans hu-mans need to feel that they are accepted, understood, and secure se-cure within their human circles. A plant withers and dies if it is shut off from air and sunight. A person shrivels when he seriously ser-iously feels that he is unloved, i unwanted, -insecure'. As people grow, one of the most important impor-tant things they learn is how to give and to receive affection. ELMER R. MOON ELECTED TO FEDERAL LAND BANK ASSN.
