Show Ashley national forest news Recreation use of the Ashley Ash-ley National Forest in 1965 made history by exceeding for the first time, the one million dollar figure, according to Dean Rowland, recreation staff officer. Total use was 1, 003, 100 visitor days with Flaming Gorge area claiming the Lion's Share of 530, 000. Fishing .i coined to be the most popuiar activity, accounting account-ing for 352, 800. General enjoyment en-joyment and sightseeing claimed claim-ed second place with &231, 650 visitor days. Camping accounted for 118, 250, picnicking 42, 100, boating 53, 300, hunting, 74, 400, winter sports, 2000, and miscellaneous activities such as hiking and riding, rock hunting, wilderness travel, gathering forest products for pleasure and scientific study accounted for 128, 600 visitor days. This use, which represents an increase of 17 over 1964, is even more surprising because of adverse weather during the summer, and the Sheep Creek flood which eliminated several popular areas. Recreationnimprovement s were constructed in the following follow-ing areas: An 18 unit campground camp-ground at Pole Creek Lake, completion com-pletion of a 25 unit campground in Whiterocks Canyon, completion comple-tion of a 21 unit campground at East Park, completion of the Water systems in Mustang Ridge Little Hole and Red Canyon Camp and Picnic Grounds, and Gooseneck Boating Camp. The completion and opening of the Red Canyon Visitor Center, exhibits installed in the Flaming Gorge Dam Visitor. Center, construction of an overflow campground camp-ground to accommodate about 300 units on holiday weekends, construction of access and small boat ramp immediately below Flaming Gorge Dam, contract awarded. And construction started on a 5-lane boat ramp and parking area on Sheep Creek Bay, and considerable flood cleanup and rehabilitation in Sheep Creek Canyon. In addition, a contract will be awarded in this fiscal year for construction of 94 -unit carap ground near Cedar Springs Boat Ramp. The above construction program pro-gram represents an investment of approximately $600, 000 . A similar program win oe required re-quired annually for several years in order to meet the expanding public recreation use. |
