County road projects go further afield for water Service districts ask construction companies to look elsewhere to meet dust-control water needs by Aaron Krenkel OF THE RECORD STAFF As Summit Coumy officials continue to struggle with the issue of water in the Snyderville Basin, the scarcity of the West's most precious resource has begun to affect road construction in the area as well. llie hot. dry and windy weather of recent weeks has augmented the dust problem confronting various road con struction projects in the area, but contractors con-tractors who had been counting on local water companies for dust-controlling water have been told to look elsewhere. Utah Department of Transportation (L'DOT) marketing and public relations director Amanda Covington explained that UDOT requires dust control at the sites of all road-building projects "The general approach." she said, "is to spray-it spray-it down. Most drivers in the area are probably familiar with the large trucks full of water that cruise construction sites, wetting down dust, din and road-building road-building gravel. Contractors typically include the cost of water in their bids for state projects. Marwan Farah s the project engineer for Gilbert Western Construction, the branch of Wasatch Constructors working on the Silver Creek Junction inter change, where crews are redesigning ihe on and off ramps. He said Gilbert Western included in their bid io L'DOT an estimate based on water prices from the county's water district. Mountain Regional Water Special Service District Now well into the project, and facing conditions thai have been exacerbating :he dust problem. Far.ih said the construction con-struction company had to scramble to find an alternate source of water Farah explained tha! construction crews will soon be laving down gravel road base, when dust can be especially abundant Although the dust problem is entirely dependent on the weather, he predicts the protect will soon necessitate at least two 4.(fcn-gallon trucks to unload water each hour But when Gilbert Western approached the counts, they were told no water is available.
