Show C-3 Saturday, July 8, 2000 The Park Record cperience a wickedly comic 'Voyeur' by Jane Southey OF THE RECORD STAFF Not a stone was left unturned in Wednesday night's perform ances! bait Lake Acting Company's "Saturdays Voyeur." The unruly and delightfully w icked annual comedy covered every possible Utah "cultural" target - The LDS church, garments. gar-ments. Gavle Ruzicka. Orrin Hatch, Merrill Cock, Deedee, gay marriages, smoking, drinking, Prozac, repression, the good ol" bovs, converts - and did I mention men-tion the LDS Church? Writers Nancy Borgenicht and Allen Nevins managed to poke and prod Utah's most obvious targets as. well as including witty jabs at local quirks along the way. Its a show for "non-members" or perhaps "members" with a vcrv good sense of humor. For anv'one who feels like an outsider in Utah, a gwd dose of SLAC would provide the perfect remedy. reme-dy. Although progressive children niight enjoy the event, there's enough "adult content" to consider con-sider leaving the kids at home. Furthermore, the topical jokes are such that a non-Utah audience audi-ence simply might not get it. The nutty plot centers on a familiar department store "ZC-MY." "ZC-MY." The first act opens during the fall General Conference and Rosh Hashanah. Although the "Brethren" have spoken and declare that the department store w ill not be sold, rumors sre circulating circu-lating to the contrary. Throughout the upheaval in retail, deep in the basement of the picture-perfect, do-gooder, store of "The Lord," four manikins lament their future in human hands. These manikins are different from the display manikins - they still have their nipples. Concerned about propriety, the brothers in management have filed off all potentially risque bodily shapes on their manikins -and the manikins in the basement are afraid. An omnipresent voice proclaims pro-claims to the audience a new history his-tory to explain the manikins' plight: "Before Genesis, before time itself, the Great Earth Mother Bra. who was the scourge of man, made the children of Bra. But man made the children of Bra in to, slaves and called them lUdnkftts.' (Given that all the LDS employees tote around various sizes of bright red Big Gulp drink cups, the manikins have dubbed them Big Gulps.) As the Manikins fear for then-nipples, then-nipples, other "outsiders" escape to the basement to find some san-itv. san-itv. The colorful gay duo in display dis-play Joel (Spenser Ashby) and Ramon (Robert Bogue) who also double as the sanctimonious hypocrites hyp-ocrites Brother Farley Pratt and Brother Parley Pope, sport their rebellious fashion statements and mimic Utah's most outrageous public figures with the help of the outstanding manikin crew (Brenda Sue Cowley. Melissa Gessel Dan Lamnaga and Jeanette Puhich). Thelma and Louise (Annette Write and Toni Lynn Bvrd). Tiffin Room cashier and waitress, sneak down to the basement to discuss their pious co-workers and smoke. The protagonist is the downtrodden down-trodden Brother Frank, also known as Frank Einstein (Kurt Proctor). An LDS convert, who struggles with his departure from his Jewish roots, Frank is trodden upon by his nagging girlinend and her manager father while he fosters a passion for the LDS candv girl Sandy. His depression culminates in his singing "Have I Always Been A Schmuck?" Management has passed the file on down to Frank and he is burdened bur-dened with the duty of filing off the manikins' nipples before the new owners take ovct the store. In the second act. six months later during the spring General Conference and Passover, the store has been sold to "the Jews " This transaction, of course, creates cre-ates chaos in the retail world -Frank, Sandy.
