Show THE PARK RECORD Viewp A-15 oints. SATURDAY, JULY 8, 2000 EDITORIAL" SLOC can have the park in 2002, but the Racquet Club is another story w j .". - t r- i ear a This is w hat Park City Council members get paid the big bucks for - trying to second guess what their constituents really want. And sometimes it is not easy. Take for instance Thursday's decision to lease part of City Park to the Salt Lake Organizing Committee as a gathering gather-ing place for sponsors during the 2002 Winter Games. It is hard enough to get a consensus on outdoor music, let alone on whether to install a corporate village in the heart of the city for a one-month period 19 months from now. Plans call for closing the north end of the park to the public and setting up a complex of "suites" which will serve corporate interests during the Games. The City Council's rationale for approving the contract is that the paik is not heavily used during the winter and that revenues rev-enues generated by the lease can be used to fund much-needed much-needed paik improvements in the future. Apparently residents were comfortable with the pro-pv.al pro-pv.al a, none turned out to object Thursday night when the City Council approved the contract with SLOC. But what about the city's other public facilities? The council is already in negotiations to rent a substantial portion por-tion of the Park City Library and Education Center to the Norwegian Trade Council in February 2002 and the city has expressed an interest in leasing the Racquet Club dur ing the Olympics. The Racquet Club may arouse more public concern. Coupled with the Park City Scrnxil District's decision to suspend classes during the Olympics, residents are already wondering whether they or their children will be able to find any sanctuary' during what promises to be a chaotic month. The decision will be an agonizing one for citizens and their elected representatives. There is no clear right or wrong choice. Residents will have to weigh the inconvenience inconve-nience limited access to the popular recreation facility for as much as a month against the potential for long-term gain (rental fees could be applied to improvements to the facility ). Of course, the school district is examining the same alternatives and if everyone decides to go for the "gold" then residents may end up with no place to run and no place to hide in 2002. Since there is no clear answer. City Council members will have to use a lifeline - that is. they should poll the audience, their constituents. And if they don't call you. don't be shy about calling them. Their job is to figure out what you want and r"ake it happen. It is a whole lot easier, easi-er, though, if you pay attention to the question and give them some clear direction. LET ME CLARIFY..J-80 EASTBOUND WILL NOT CLOSE OH THURSDAY JULY 6 BUT 1-80 WESTBOUND WILL CLOSE ON THURSDAY JULY 13 SO WE CAN INSTALL A MESSAGE SIGN TO NOTIFY MOTORISTS OF CLOSURES'; LETTERS TO THE EDITOR JOS Praise for tradition What a celebration! As a resident res-ident of Park City for over 20 years. I have watched the parade just getting better and more fun each year. W e all also need to thank the people w ho were involved in the F-lt flyover, which made the parade v.i v cry special. These people peo-ple include, not only the pilots and maintenance mainte-nance crews, but others who have put this together for the past several years. We appreciate the efforts of Colonel Pete Williams. 41sth Fighter Wing Commander. Stephanie, the Public Affairs Officer of the -llh Fighter Wing at Hill AFB. and Colonel Dave Stephenson, a retired Air Force officer. Thanks to you all for making this Fourth f July more exciting and for all your work in coordinating the flight of those beautiful Air Force jets for all of us to see. Judy Costello Fourth of July thank you Editor As a community we should all thank the men and women of the 41lth Fighter Wing for giv mg up time from their families to pro-vide pro-vide the splendid fly -over with four of their F-lfj Fighting Falcons. These men and women are all reservists and are not required to do this but do it anyway, out of respect for the countless others who went before them to give us the freedoms that we sometimes take for eranted. A packed pancake breakfast in the park. The LDS Church served mouth-watenng treats. Not one, but two F-15 flyovers around parade start time. A traditional old-fashioned, small-town parade which generated tremendous enthusiasm enthu-siasm and energy. At least a third of the 95 entries were accompanied by music. Children played prominent roles on many of the entnes. Entertainment in the park, with enough variation to appeal to almost any musical taste from jaz. to rock and roll, to choral, to gospel. Members of the I'.S. Ski Team performing perform-ing incredible feats of athleticism on twin trampolines to the amazement and joy of the crowd. Outstanding food made from "secret family recipes" featuring brats, chicken, hamburgers, pizza and other mouth-watering treats. A plethora of games for children of all ages. This was a smashing success and will greatly benefit Boy Scout Troop 75 fund-raising fund-raising so they can attend the National Jamboree. An overall sense of fun and enthusiasm, which permeated the entire day. It resulted in tremendous crowds for every venue. Spectators came early and stayed late which we interpret to mean that they enjoyed the day and they enjoyed the chance to be together to celebrate our nation's birthday and to celebrate how good it is to be alive and to live in this beautiful mountain community. com-munity. Rick Silverman Park Cm Watch your language! Patriotic criticism Editor I am disgusted and don't know who to blame. Park City had a great parade on the Fourth, but it w as ruined for me by the incorrect incor-rect display of our national colors. Someone was ignorant of proper flag protocol when, at the head of the parade, the American flag was earned in a subordinate and inferior position. This happened 10 years ago and it seems somebody's knowledge has not improv ed. Then again, at the City Park. Coors was the only beer available. An excellent beer is produced nght here in Park City. 1 can't believe that Mr Schirt did not wa n to be represented at a city function, so I guess someone in authority did not want W asatch to be part of our national celebration. Who and why? W ill this person want to keep kxral businesses out of other city-sponsored events such as Art Festival? Something is not nght and I dvxi't know who to Name Maybe someone out there can help me. James G. Piper Little faith in local government Editor. The recent ta'.k of renting all of our public facilities is troubling. Not because I'm against it. but because I remember being assured in the last city council election that this would not happen. Where ts the bellowing bellow-ing v oice of Shauna Kerr now ? Go back and look up how many times in her campaign she said "Locals First" when it came to the Racquet Gub and the library. Now. silence. As I said. I'm not against these rentals. I just don't trust our city government to ski the nght thing with the money. So. I'd like to call for the council to pledge that T5 percent of the funds generated go directly back to the facility rented. Oh. by the way. I'd like that in wilting. On another issue, I recently attended the puPlic information meeting on the Yalderonde project in Round alley. If you missed this meeting. PLEASE make the effort to review this massive protect. This developer is asking for a 3 AX) percent increase in the zoned density. Further, the Park City Council has continually boasted about buying and preserving Round Valley In fact, the city only owns land around Round Valley, and since the developer's land is not annexed into Park City, we will have very little say. Smefl a rat? I do. We can't count on C.A R.G. as our only defense aeamst these back-door deals; thev need Editor With the celebration of my nation's birthday. birth-day. I am posting this to ask all who read it to watch their language. My nation's birthday birth-day has a name. It is called Independence Day. Independence has real meaning That is the birth of this nation. Please do not say "the Fourth of July ." It takes away from the meaning of my favonte holiday and this most important celebration. We tend to think that each of our own individual voices is small and diluted. Many of us don't even bother voting. That is a big mistake. W e really do make a ditference in how we vote and even what we say Take control. Choose to say Independence Day and not "the Fourth of July ." Other examples of insidious changes in our language reflect turning away from our hentage. What do we call those in public office? Remember when those m public' office called themseh.es "public servants." Now they are calling themselves "the authorities." WTi.it does this mean? They work for us. We elect them ve can vote them out. We can replace them. We are a self-governing people. They work for us. Let's choose to call them public sen ants. W hat do you call land in our nation that is not privately held ' It is NOT ' government land'" Our nation's Constitution specifically prohibits our government trom ow ning land with some very limited and small exceptions. I remember the time when it was called "public land " Listen closely for more words that reflect change away from our heritage of Independence and the divinely -inspired, self-government with systems of checks and balances that our Founding Fathers and rev-olutionanes rev-olutionanes gave us by nsking everything they knew and fighting and dying for us. Throughout our history, many have fought and died to preserve our freedoms and hentage The least we can Jo is protect our hentage by the words we choose. Each of us can easily do that. Even it you are one of those who believe that your one vote won't make a difference and it is not worth your time, y ou can at least do this. Our Founding Fathers warned us to be ever vigilant. This means awareness. This means we must look for threats to our freedoms. free-doms. This means that we must maintain control of our government that wot ks iot us For now. it is still government ol the people I'se your vote wisely while you still have a choice. Choose your words carefully to reflect our hentage. Now that you have read this, you can be more aware of dangerous changes in our thinking. That is where excessive government govern-ment power begins. Now that you are thinking think-ing this way. improper words will stand iHit to you. It will be like getting a cat that is not familiar. All of a sudden you start noticing them on the road.
