Expecting the usual crowd of 4W-500 for the annual 4th of July morning run. officials were amazed to see nearly 1,000 peopie show up. "It was the largest turnout ever. We had twice as many entrants as last year." said Kathy Burke, Cole Sport soft goods manager, who helped register the runners for the three-mile mountain race. By the time the throng was divided into men's and women's age categories (42 in all), the race began well after the 8 a.m. start time. "It's starting to get known in the community and Salt Lake as well," Burke continued. "It's become quite the tradition for the 4th of July." The sudden popularity of the race and overload of people, however, how-ever, led to a rash of logistical problems. Complaints about crowded registration and the late start were rampant. Cole Sport, working with The Salt Lake Track Club, also ran out of bibs and T-shirts T-shirts (though Cole is re-printing shirts for participants). "We ran out of everything, so we are definitely planning for a bigger crowd next time," Burke added. The "out-and-back" course started at the base of Park City Mountain Resort, where it snaked around the golf course undulating through Thaynes Canyon. A w ater station was set up at midpoint in Iron Canyon, where runners turned around toward Silver King Drive, only tc finish near Cole Sport. The average time for the three-mile three-mile run was 28-30 minutes, though the overall winner cut that in half with a 15:21. The top three runners in each age division received medals, while the fourth and fifth place finishers earned ribbons. rib-bons. Overall winners for both men and women received $100 Cole Sport gift certificates followed by $75 for second and $50 for third place. Proceeds from the $15 entry fee run w ill go to the Park City Ski Education Foundation to benefit the Park City Ski Team. Overall winners on the men's side were Dave Spence, 15:21.
