Show -fT Spotlight on Sports BY DON ROBINSON This has to be one of the best years Moab has ever had in gaining athletic honors. The collection of hardware hard-ware at the awards ceremony Monday night was most impressive. Adding a dramatic touch to the event was the arrival of the Moab golf team midway in the program pro-gram with a championship trophy. In the space of three days the Devils won two state titles and were runnerup in another. They also claimed four individual track championships champ-ionships and had the medalist in the state golf meet. Add to that Steve Wyatt's outstanding playoff record in baseball base-ball and the Moab faithful really have something to crow about. In track, Gregg Holland of Moab was the only record breaker in the entire Class A meet. Revenge is not considered one of the most noble of motives, but it can be sweet. Last year Uintah eliminated eliminat-ed Moab in the final inning of their baseball playoff game. The Utas went on to the title and made no attempt at-tempt to hide their gloating over the Moab victory. This time Moab won - not only the Region Six titles, but the state as well. That took some of the sting away from Uintah winning the region track title. Dixie put Moab out of the football playoffs last fall with a yardage victory vic-tory in the 14-14 quarterfinal game. This time the Flyers Fly-ers had to leave home for a change and the Moab baseball base-ball teani presented them with a goose egg in baseball. With only one senior on the track squad that went to state, Moab has their knives honed for revenge in next year's track meet. One of the quietest and most faithful Moab fans has my nomination for fan of the year. A long-time employee em-ployee of Midland Telephone Company, Guy Bradley, seldom misses a Moab sports event. Guy drives to Salt Lake City each year for the state track meet and the event, ev-ent, wouldn't be the same without seeing him near the fjnish line.. He doesn't make much noise, but his presence pres-ence has always been an omen of Moab success. In the north-south all-star baseball game to be played play-ed in June, only seniors can play so Moab is hoping to get a spot for Lenny Walterschied who broke an ankle early in the season and didn't get a chance to show his fine ability as a catcher. |
