Show Devils Win Tw Stcite Ciiinpfenslilps Moab woii its first state championship in history Friday Fri-day afternon when the Red Devils shut out Dixie High School 4-0 behind the two hit pitching of Steve Wyatt and two big innings offensively. The win was doubly sweet as it came before a large home crowd and the victim was Dixie a long time tormentor tor-mentor of Moab in other playoffs. The Devils wasted no time in jumping on Jeff Bradshaw of Dixie for two runs in the first inning. Mike Hight started start-ed the damage with a double. Paul Wyatt followed with a single. Steve Wyatt grounded ground-ed out, but when Dixie tried to catch the hustling Hight at third the throw got away and two runs scored. Bradshaw settled down for the next couple of innings and Wyatt, who had fifteen strikeouts, maintained control for Moab. No Flyer ever goj past second base and only one got that far. Dixie had a double in the first inning and a single in the fourth. Wyatt promptly picked off that runner run-ner at first. In the fifth inning three singles sent two more runners run-ners across for Moab. Mike Steele hit safely, Hight got his second bingle of the game and Steve Wyatt added another an-other single. Both runs scored scor-ed as Wyatt took second on the throw into the plate. Mike Walterscheid also had .two hits for Mor-b which didn't figure in the scoring. Jamison and Millen finished finish-ed up cn the mound for Dixie and held the Devils score- less, but the damage was done. Enroute to the title Moab downed defending champs, Uintah in a three game series, ser-ies, 0-1, 3-2 and 5-0. They trounced South Sevier 10-4 in the semifinals and ended with the whitewash Friday of the 1971 runerup, Dixie. The Devils ended with an 11-3 record, losing to only one Utah team the 1-0 loss to Uintah. Coach Ward Curtis, by virtue of the win, has been named head coach for the North all-stars in the all- state game June 3 at Dixie. When members of the Moab golf team asked Coach Glen Richeson if they had a chance at winning a trophy Monday, at the Provo City Golf Course the coach had a very standard stan-dard answer. Richeson told his charges that they could win if the all shot their best competitive competi-tive rounds of the year. The Devils had finished third in their own region on their own course which didn't give much promise of a high finish in the slate. They were the last team to even qualify for the state meet. Richescn's advice turned out very well. Every member of the team went onto the course with that in mind and every member did just what they had to do to win. Soph Dan Vlosich fired a 74, his lowest competitive round of the year and the best in the state to win medalist me-dalist honors. Senior Kent Beach added a 77 which tied him for third in individual scoring. Gene Roberts had an 86 for his best round ever and senior Larry Marsing took a 92 to give Moab a 329 total and their second state title in three days. Marsing didn't know it, but he needed a par on the final hole for the championship. That's what he got and Cedar City had to be content with a 330 and second place in the state meet. |
