Show HALT CALLED AT WEDDING Preacher Refuses to Per-. Per-. forn Ceremony for a . Divorced Man.- s HARTFORD. Conn., May IS. 'With the bridal party approaching the chancel chan-cel and. the church filled with fashionable fashion-able people, the Rev. Dr. James J. Goodwin of Christ Episcopal church refused re-fused to perform the ceremony and dismissed the guests because In reading, the marriage license he found that the bridegroom had been divorced ten i years previously. The wedding was to have been that of A. Lincoln Chase, manager of & department de-partment store here, and Miss Gladys A. G. Geer; daughter of one of the 'oldest 'old-est residents of Hartford. "Friends, the wedding has been postponed," post-poned," was the only explanation Dr. Goodwin made to the assembly. Later he said: 'The laws of the Episcopal church forbid me to marry a divorced person. I did not know the circumstance- until I read the license while I was in the church ready to perform the ceremony. I am very sorry to have caused the party any embarrassment, but I could not act otherwise." Miss Geer and Mr. Chase, after leaving leav-ing the church, were driven to the home of. the Rev. H. H. Kelsey and were married. |
