The city officials and heads of departments de-partments generally get down to work about 9 o'clock -in the morning,- take about an hour at noon for lunch and leave the office abdut 6 o'clock p. m. Members of the City Council are supposed sup-posed to work about five hours a week and receive $500 a year or nearly $2.50 an hour. As to the Mayor, he works off and on. whenever there Is anything for him to do. He receives a salary of $1500 per annum, and In the case of Mayor I. LABORERS 43 to $3.S0 per day. , and pnt in more than eight hours a day. The two hardest worked, clerks are said to be E. R. Kneass of the Waterworks department and Horace H. Smith of the Board of Health. They earn more than their salaries of $75 a month. Clerk Smith's salary, however, has recently been Increased by the Council and he will receive $90 next month. . . ' . General Increase Agitated. There Is some talk of a general Increase In-crease in salaries being made to meet the increased cost of living which Is rapidly becoming greater, and it Is earnestly hoped by the employees that some of the "talk" will be productive of substantial results. xnompson, ne earns it-Wages it-Wages of Bank and File. The rank and file of employees, are required to work eight hours a day, and receive from $2 per day, for laborers, labor-ers, to $3 per day for mechanics. Ordinary Ordi-nary laborers and helpers receive $2; plumbers In the Waterworks department, depart-ment, $3; and teamsters, i who are required re-quired to furnish their own teams, $3.50 per day. , f Teamsters in the Street department are required . to - furnish . their j own wagons and . horses, and drivers of sprinkling wagons furnish the 'teams only. Teamsters in both departments receive the same wages. : These men are required to perform eight hours' actual work each day for the city, which means that they must hitch, unhitch and attend to their horses on their own time. Wages Have Been Lower. These wages are not high but they are higher than they used to be. Laborers formerly received but $1.75 a day and teamsters only $3 a day. And they would not object to another raise of about the same proportions. Many of the clerks of the various city departments work hard while they work , |
