Show Oldest Admiral Dead. Rear Admiral Thomas O. Selfrldge, 8r., U. S. N., retired, died at tho McLean Mc-Lean asylum at Waverly, Mass., Wednesday. Wed-nesday. He was probably the oldest living ofllcer of that rank in any navy in the world, and there is no other navy which had two admirals, father and son, both retired, Tho elder admiral ad-miral wus born in Massachusetts In 1801 nnd was appointed to the navy from that slate on Jan. 1, 1818. The sou, Hear Admiral 'IhomiisO. Selfrldge, Jr., was born Feb. 1,1, 1830, and joined the navy ut the uge of 15. The second oldest son Is Commander James Hus-sell Hus-sell Selfrldge, born July 11, lui'.i, and In the navy since 1S01. During tho senior Selfrldge's earlier days he made some voyages In mer-chnnt mer-chnnt vessels, as the nnvy was considerably con-siderably reduced in ships for muiiy years after thu war of 18U', and there was but scant employment of the olllcers. When the Civil war broke out Commander Com-mander Selfrldge was too far advanced In years to accept active duty at sea, und he was assigned as commandant of the Mare Island nu'vy yard, 1802-04. and again In 1673. In the latter year all retired olllcers were withdrawn from active service. Admiral Selfrldge resided at Georgetown, S. C, but for many years he paid .annual visits to San Frauclsco, where he had two sons residing. |
